Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Today I rewashed and packed the 19 butchered chickens from our last batch of meat birds.
For those that limit or do not use chlorine bleach at all, how do you disinfect?
I have Ecocover's non-chlorine bleach for the laundry, I am trying to cut our chlorine usage, will that work in the same way in the kitchen?
When I finish packing the meat, I almost crave the " antiseptic" smell of bleach but I want to be environmentally friendly.

Believe it or not, after packing the meat, we still had chicken for dinner tonight.

Well, I've been trying to limit my harsh cleansers, but I still use bleach in situations like this. I'm not very hard-core yet...

I've read that GSE (grapefruit seed extract) is a very good disinfectant.. and you can take it internally so it would be VERY safe to use.. the only link I think I have to it at the moment is one that sells a product.. so take that for what it's worth.. but I didn't see anything there that I haven't heard from other sources.

We just use plain ol' soapy water. I wash once with a soapy rag, then wash again with a clean soapy rag. We've never had a problem.

tea tree oil is supposed to be a good disinfectant. it also has a very pungent odor, so maybe it will trick your olfactory part of the brain into thinking its bleach. but i do use a tad of non chlorine bleach after chicken, and wash immediately after with dish soap and scalding hot water.

The lady that I buy colloidal silver from says she uses it for this as well! Maybe that might another option...

In Organic Housekeeping, the author says that a spray with vinegar followed by a spray with hydrogen peroxide kills more germs than bleach alone (I think).

Found a link. Hope that's helpful. Disinfecting
