We found this book at the library today and I'm putting on my wishlist at Amazon (yes, it's THAT good!): Sewing with Felt: Learn Basic Stitches to Create More Than 60 Projects by Buff McAllister is a fabulous first-sewing book. The projects are great and useful -- book covers, puppets, Christmas ornaments, placemats, doll furniture -- and all use felt (which is VERY easy to sew on) and simple hand-sewing techniques (all of which are well-illustrated). The book is also spiral-bound -- so it'll actually stay open while your kids are trying to use it!
