We have started reading Hitty, Her First Hundred Years (the original version) and my girls were interested in what kind of doll she was. I thought it would be fun to try to make a wooden jointed doll like Hitty but no one around here knows how to carve wood.
Do you have any suggestions for doll kits or instructions on how to make wooden dolls? From the description that we have read thus far, she is "pegged" or jointed at the shoulders and the hips, but not at the elbows or knees. She has mitten hands and flat feet.
Any ideas?

If you have a local woodcrafters, they have LOTS of books, classes and woodworkers that can help  . They have a number of books on wooden toys for certain!

Rachel -- now you've got me on anew "great for all of us" hobby -- the boys and dad could do the carving, the girls and mom could do the clothes, accessories and generally finish up ... this would be so fun for a pioneer unit ....

Just to add to it Mary... I was thinking about making a 'boy doll' for my son with costumes for each era of history we study!
Now... if he and Daddy make the wooden doll together, you can also work through each of the historical costumes with the kids.
I must also mention that certain little girls like to do woodworking, while certain boys like to sew... so you can make it a family venture with whoever likes to do whatever, doing it.  (BTW the little boy and girl live in my house and like to do BOTH types of craft because it is something MUM and DAD do... which means it is 'BIG')

Oh, I agree -- actually at least one little boy around here is much more persnickety than his female counterpart as far as doing the detail work ...
I just think this would be so fun -- a nice change from sewing but still quite crafty .... and just think of all the KNITTED things we could do with it!

Rachel,
Thank you so much for the link. My daughters are begging for a Hitty doll now. We might consider one for them to share for Christmas, but I think I will take a lesson from the book and make the girls sew some clothes for her before they can play with her. Is that education or cruel and unusual punishment? I'm going with education!

Oh it is definitely educational... after all they wouldn't want her to be NAKED would they??
It also makes it much more 4real and important for them...
