Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm having some thumb tendonititis or carpal tunnel ( alot of pain in my hands in the big pad under my thumb). The only thing I've done alot of lately is knit.

I knit holding the yarn in the right hand and throwing. I've tried continental, but I just can't seem to get it. Is there something that would help with the pain while I knit? If you use some type of hand brace, could you link to which one works for you? Is there something I may be doing wrong? I've been knitting for 2 years now, and I haven't had pain until now. I used to get this pain when I would blow dry my hair with a curling brush. It's very painful.

Thanks for any help.
Blessings,
Ana Betty

Ana,

I get numb and pain in my fingers and hand, have had this problem for many years. I have found HandEze really work for me for years. These allow free movement, but support and keep the muscles warm.

When I was the main pianist for a school musical, I wore these all the time and I was able to play without pain.

I bought them from a local needlecraft shop.

Sometimes adjusting your grip on your needles helps. I also find being able to switch from continental to English and back helps... a circular shawl helped me to learn continental although I still find it hard to purl!

Also circular knitting is a little better because you can rest the weight in your lap rather than on your wrists.

You may also try either the rubber grips for needles designed for those with arthritis OR doing some big needle knitting for a while. If you keep two projects going, a big needle one and a small needle one, you can switch out as it gets uncomfortable.

Good luck finding the cure!

Ana,

I'm so sorry ... Rachel's and Jenn's ideas are good ones. I've never had CT, but that may be because I almost always knit with circulars (even if knitting flat) and all the weight is in my lap ....

Wouldn't you know that now that you're knitting, this would happen !

How funny you should post this today, because just yesterday a gentleman told me that "the static electricity from metal needles causes the pain." I thought it was odd, but admit that my hands do always hurt more when I use metal needles instead of bamboo/wood. I thought it was the way the wood needles warm to the touch and bend a bit as I knit, that helped. So anyway, that's what I know, FWIW. Hope you get relief soon!

For this reason, fearing that this pain would recur, I knit with bamboo needles and circular needles.

I don't know if it's true CT because the pain isn't radiating up my arms like it used to when I used to play piano. It's mostly concentrated in the tendons leading to my thumbs.

I have tried watching the online videos to learn continental knitting, and I still can't get the hang of it--I can't get the tension right. My pattern is a K3P3 on size 10 circular, bamboo needles.

I do have those two Elizabeth Zimmerman videos (can you believe I haven't watched them yet???). Would those help? I'm open to suggestions.

I'm working on a prayer shawl for a missionary's wife in Turkey. They have 8 children and when I met her on her furlough in the states, she was so cold all the time. So, the Lord put it on my heart to knit her a shawl.

I've had obstacle after obstacle. I thought I had lost my knitting bag, so that postponed my knitting. Our church even prayed about it. They know the months I've been working on it (I'm a little slow). I found it! Then now the pain starts! I think I'm getting some spiritual opposition here!

I have to finish it this month because her husband will be in the states for a pastor's conference and he can take it back home with him. You can't send things to Turkey that are over 1-2 pounds without it getting stolen from what I've heard. So, the pressure is on a little.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm also going to try to take some magnesium/calcium supplements. I know that helped me with leg cramps when I was pregnant! We'll see.

Please let me know if you think of something else, or if you know a real easy way to learn continental.

Grace & Peace!
