Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My little guy has eczema all over his chest, shoulders, and tummy. He is itchy...One of my daughters deals w/eczema especially in the winter and when she drinks milk. She was prescribed a steroid ointment last year, but I never used it b/c of the cancer concerns. We were able to keep hers managable by frequent application of lotion , no milk, and going back to a "free" laundry detergent.

For my little guy (3), I am going back to the "free" detergent, have started applying baby oil (Arbonne brand w/no mineral oil), especially after bath, and whenever he lets me (not often, I have to apply at night once he's asleep ) and I've taken him off dairy and am thinking about citrus too. He loves OJ and oranges, so this will not be easy.

Any other suggestions?

Has your ds ben tested for allergies?
My niece with allergies is allergic to the base used to make of many lotions and cremes applied to her broken skin.

Good luck.

an allergy test will give you the most answers. ask for the RAST test. it's not pleasant, but for the long-term it's worth it.

if you're looking for quick solutions, try taking out all of the most common allergens: wheat, dairy, eggs, nuts, soy, shellfish. this is not going to be easy, but may help -- i said MAY, because some of the allergies may be delayed reactions, e.g., appears several days to a week after exposure to the allergen so you might not see results for a while.

allergies to corn are also on the rise, and just last week 2 people wrote me to ask what i use as a substitute for rice because their kids are allergic to it.

we've been dealing with allergies and eczema for years, so i know how hard it is. praying for you and your little one.

re the steroid -- yes, we have concerns too, but you kinda have to weigh the risks vs. the benefits, i.e., when my hubby is to the point where he's all red and has difficulty sleeping or concentrating on work, he HAS to have the steroid to calm it down. short-term steroid works and in our experience is okay to use. my husband has been an eczema and asthma sufferer all his life (he's 45) and so while i don't like it that he has to use steroids 3x a year or so, sometimes it's the only thing that will help him. what i do is supplement with probiotics, antioxidants, give him lots of whole, healthy foods to somewhat combat whatever negative effects the steroid has on his body.

A friend recommended coconut oil to me for my little one. (His eczema flares when he cuts teeth.) The coconut oil didn't help my son but my friend said it helped hers. Aquaphor has been a help to our son.

My child with eczema is allergic to fish, shellfish, tree nuts and peanuts, corn - and is just back on wheat and eggs in little amounts. As well as the airborne stuff. She is doing very well now generally. Things that have worked:

- dietary
- allergy covers on bedding
- Renew cream by Melaluca
- the allergy free laundry detergent and extra rinse
- good vitamin supplement
- chemical free house as much as possible
