Clara has thrush. We've given her two courses of Nystatin and it's still there. Any suggestions?
Dawn

No personal experience with this, but I know several moms who have used gentian violet with good success. Hope little Clara is feeling better soon...

If you are nursing her, could you be passing it back to her from the breast. I know someone who had horrible thrush problems and doc gave her some meds for the baby that she wiped on her breast prior to breastfeeding - solved both problems at once.

Janet,
Yes, I am nursing her, but I don't have any symptoms. Could I be passing it back to her even though I don't have symptoms?

Hey Dawn I'm not Janet but to answer your question - yes you could be passing it back and forth. With my third child I had terrible problems with thrush (yeast) and successfully used Gentian Violet 1% (you can get it over the counter). I had no symptoms other than I could feel my let down a little stronger when infected.
The purple stuff is messy but works great. You and the baby need to wear white during the treatment, you dap the solution all over your nipples, let it dry then nurse as normal 2x/day. It usually took 3-5 days. Take all your white clothes and wash them with some bleach and they will come out clean. The purple will wear off in a day or two from the babies mouth/face.
HTH.

I have had extremely good results with Lactobacillus Sporogenes. Ours is a powder but you can also buy capsules. It is not only a good bacteria (like acidophilus) but also a spore which actively "eats" the yeast. I have taken it internally, given it to the children and applied it in a paste topically. It has cleared up yeast infections, infant thrush for me and my family in about a week.
While taking it, eliminate white flour and sugar products as well as fermented foods like pickles, vinegar, etc because they feed the yeast. Also, I would add the precaution to drink plenty of water and take large amount of vitamin c while on it because when the yeast die off, it puts your body into a sort of flulike state for the first two days or so. With the added water and vitamin c, the symptoms are mild (slight headache, nausea).

I had this problem once and I took Grapefruit Seed extract ...(I took the liquid kind )
and swabbed ds mouth with food grade Aloe vera to help with any discomfort there.
I don't remember having die off problems with this.

Hey Dawnie,
I am a retired LLL leader and a veteran of several bouts with thrush.....so I can chime in here as well. You certainly can be reinfecting one another even though you are asymptomatic. Thrush is difficult stuff to get rid of and if one of you is symptomatic, the other needs to be treated.
Some folks have had good results with Gentian Violet, but it is messy and you can only use it for a few days.
I highly recommend a thrush fighting kit sold by Kerry's Herbals. It uses Black Walnut Oil, an herbal salve with antifungal properties, Grapefruit Seed extract and Oregon Grapeseed Oil. It reallly works and I've used it several times. If you have any specific questions, Dawnie, you can pm me.
Best,
Kathleen

Dear Dawn,
Gentian violet can also burn if your aren't careful. Found that one out. And it is a heck of a mess.
While taking Nystatin, you have to put back the "good" bacteria at the same time. The best way to do this is give the child and you live acidophilus and rhamnosus and cut out sugar. You take the capsule and baby gets the acidophulus powder from the capsule after you have swabbed out the babies' mouth after nursing. You can also mix the capsule with a little bit of sugarfree yougert. Swab off your breasts with a diluted mixture of vinegar and water also and keep changing bras. ( Vinegar mixture becaus thrush can't live in an acidic environment.)
The problem with Nyastin is that they give it to the child in a sugar (loaded sugar) base. We struggled with #4 for 6 months and thrush, before I "got smart" and ditched the sugar-based nysatin and had the pharmacy order the plain powder form. It worked after a week.
I still take Nature's Way Primadophilus when I am nursing which I hope to do anyday now. Ahhem....this baby is not wanting to come out! It is a precaution against thrush for me since I am very suseptable to it (had it pretty bad with the first 4 kids UNTIL I started a regiment against it with the 5th.
Blessings,
Setphanie

Dear Dawn,
By the way, we went through 14 dozes of Nystatin before I ditched the sugar-based form. This was extreme, I know. In fact, the doctor had the entire family on Nystatin and no sugar. The stress did me in. I knew there had to be another solution. I also began swabbing out the baby's mouth with vinegar/water solution after nursing and giving her the powder nystatin in a yougert base.
Hope this helps!
Blessings,
Stephanie
