Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I recently weaned my almost 2yr old. My other kids weaned more gradually. I've never had this problem before. Is there anything I can do to fix it (besides starting up nursing again)? This is not fun...

And express enough milk to relieve pressure. Just expressing enough to relieve the pressue makes it more comfortable for you and reduces the risk of developing a breast infection. Minimal expression like this doesn't signal the body to make lots more milk. This enables you to help your body adjust a bit more gradually as you can reduce the amount you need to release slowly over the course of several days. And the cabbage leaves and other cold compresses as mentioned are helpful as well.

I'd also recommend cutting back your fluids for 48 hours or so, and tightening up your bra, if you can.

This worked well for a friend in a similar situation.

God bless,

This is what works best for me. I've had to wean suddenly three times now. You're right, it's no fun.   Take a long hot bath or shower to help soothe the discomfort and also help the expressing along, or use hot compresses.   You can taper off over the course of a few days.

Also wearing closer fitting undergarments or bra does help in my experience. Even using one of those rib cage supporter type things as a sort of binding.

Cry. Weaning is so emotional and full breasts when weaning make me want to cry! Offering a nine hour novena to Our Lady of La Leche tomorrow for you!
NOVENA IN HONOR OF OUR LADY OF LA LECHE

PRAYER

Lovely Lady of La Leche, most loving Mother of our Savior, Jesus Christ and my Mother, please listen to my humble prayer. Your heart knows my every wish, my every need. I trust, dear Mother, that you will shelter me beneath your protecting mantle, like what you did to your Son. Intercede to Him that I may have the courage and the strength to overcome whatever difficulty surrounds me. Give me the grace to be faithful to you always and may you be my shining inspiration now and forever.

Our Lady of La Leche, pray for us.

Old school was to bind you up tightly, wrapping around and around.

Yes, but unfortunately creates a prime environment in many women for breast infection/blocked ducts.

Ice packs. I don't nurse, but when the engorgement happens on the 3rd day, I usually walk around with frozen peas stuffed into my double-layered sports bras.

I've also had to add maxi-pads to the insides of my two-sizes-too-small sports bras to control the leaking while it dries up. But the main thing that has helped me is lots of advil--staying on top of it--and the ice packs.

I'll pray for you, too. The 3rd thru 7th day are the hardest for me post-delivery, for this very reason.

I second the use of cabbage leaves. I was always prone to mastitis, and some of our children weaned quickly when having surgeries...the cabbage leaves and warm compresses or soaking in a hot bath worked wonders. Crying is also very helpful! I allow myself a good cry while taking a hot bath or shower...very healing.

Well, I'm tempted to cry, but a big part of the reason I'm doing this is because I'm hoping to become pregnant and my body won't let me. I have an unusually active oversupply and my cycles hold off a long time when I'm nursing...this last one was 18 mos!!

I'm trying everything y'all have recommended. I think the binding may help in my situation because when I've tried to reduce my milk supply with cabbage leaves and cutting back on switching sides in the past I've gotten so full that plugged ducts were inevitable. I've never done it before, but I'm feeling willing to try anything this morning, and sometimes there's something to an 'old wive's tale'.

Thank you all so much. I'm encouraged this morning.

Books,
Also I think you ought to rest as much as you would with a flu or something -- ie as much as you can with a bunch of little ones around.   I am always so much more prone to mastitis and clogged ducts if I am moving around a lot, using my muscles, or even a bit sleep-deprived, and I've heard others say the same thing. When I weaned Paddy not very long ago, I ached so much for days. You may not want to cry but surely taking your hormonal sensititivity into account is a good thing.   Take care of yourself and monitor your health.

I still would be very cautious with the idea of binding. It isn't actually an old wives tale or folk medicine so much as it is early 20th century male doctor medicine. Binding is of particular concern in the early post-partum so your situation is a bit different but still the research shows caution is warranted.

If you are looking for more folk remedy approaches I forgot to mention the herbs associated with reducing milk production - sage, peppermint, and parsley (Tammy mentioned the sage tea - though tea is the lowest dose). If you are interested in specific info (type, dose, time frame, etc.) let me know and I'll type it in from The Nursing Mother's Herbal, by Sheila Humphrey. Sage in particular is very potent. Some women start with that for a few days then transition to the peppermint or parsley. It does need to be taken for awhile so that there won't be a rebound when it is stopped.
