Anyone had any good or bad experiences with D&C to share?
I'm leery of having one for a couple of reasons, mainly needing to know for sure there is no baby/no chance of baby living, and then the possible side effects/complications.
They did an ultrasound yesterday and there was only a very small gestational sack, with no baby. I am technically at 8 weeks 3 days, so there should be a baby/"fetal pole" there. Like they say it could be that my dates are of, but I don't think they'd be that off. Don't know? But yet, I want to be sure. On the other hand I have been bleeding, not that heavy, but bleeding, for the last 2 days.
Tomorrow I go in for another appt. and HCG blood draw. I'm thinking of getting a D&C so I(and my family) don't have to go through either the long wait of natural miscarriage or the chance of hemorrhaging again like the last 2 miscarriages at more then 6 weeks.
I guess I'm just looking for some good advice on D&C that's more sound than the typical places like Baby Center.

The only one I had was after a miscarriage, heavy bleeding, thought it was resolved.. went in to the ER for pain (kidney stone) and found out I had some retained placenta. So no moral dilemma about it. And it didn't feel hard on my body.. though I was warned to not conceive for 3 months afterward. I did go on to have 2 more babies after that too.
Having btdt with the hemorrhaging, I don't blame you at all for wanting to avoid that. And really, the serial hcg tests are typically pretty reliable from what I recall.
Oh and take alfalfa.. great at boosting low iron from blood loss.

Prayers.
In my experience, I would probably wait a week, do another US to be sure, and then schedule a D&C if that would make you more comfortable.
I have had both natural m/c and D&Cs. The D&C was less taxing for me (emotionally and physically).
Prayers, though, that your next US will be different.

I had a D&C. We very sure that the baby had passed. My very pro-life doctor makes certain that that is true before he does them. It was a few days until I felt physically recovered. I agree with Monica, that if you are unsure, you could wait a little longer to confirm. In my case, we had seen a weak heartbeat two weeks before and there wasn't one once I started bleeding. I'll be praying for you as you make your decision.

I had a D&C and agree with you that it was better for me and my family to not have a long drawn out ordeal. I have known too many who ended up having to have one after all becasue there were complications and not everything was expelled.
My very pro-life doctor ensured there was no chance of the baby living.

I have had 5 D&C's. Some mc wasn't progressing, some because of hemorrahaing, the most recent 2 to avoid the possibility of either of those outcomes. It helped make some bad situations slightly more tolerable. In all my MC's there was no chance the babies were still alive.

Thank you all for your input, it was helpful in discerning. I ended up starting to hemorrhage right before my appt. with the Dr. Wed. afternoon and so decided with the Dr. that D&C was the best route, to prevent too much blood loss and just have things done with for all our family's sake and mine. I'm glad we made that decision, and it has made recovery much faster and easier this time around. So, again, we are grateful for the input, and, of course prayers, too. Thank you all for your kindness and support, it's such a blessing to have a place to turn for friendship, wisdom, prayers, and moral support!
