I really have worked on not doing this during the day with success. My dentist wants me to wear a guard at night and told me to buy OTC one.

Anyone use a night guard for clenching (not grinding). I got one called sleep right. Haven't tried it yet. I am curious weather these work for clenching in the sleep. Right now I wonder if my brain will think its a chew toy and I'll clench more in my sleep?

I used to wear one, and it did help. I was getting headaches from clenching my teeth in my sleep, and was worried that clenching on the night guard would have the same effect, but the dentist said that even the small space caused by the guard would relieve pressure and he was right. Although, the way mine fit (I had a custom one) made it less comfortable to clench, so I did it less anyway. I no longer have the guard, but I will sometimes find myself clenching again and simply try to keep my tongue between my teeth when I fall asleep. Honestly, that works almost as well for me.

I can't sleep without mine. I worry about breaking my teeth.
My dentist recommended The Doctors Brand many years ago when he noticed the wear on my teeth. It worked for many years.
I also bought a custom one for $500 at my previous dentist. Hated it. But kept it because I just couldn't throw it out.
My current dentist had me bring it in when I I was having a few bite issues. He wanted to make me one of HIs custom mouth guards and I told him I had been that route. He stated I really should LOVE it, and he adjusted it and I do love it. I would still use The Doctors but i like the fit of this "new" one.

Big time clencher here! I had a mouth guard made years ago for $500, and after a couple years, it went missing. The guard does not stop you from clenching your teeth, it is just a buffer between your teeth. I have not had the money since to have another made, so I bought an OTC one from Walmart. It is not as comfortable as my old one, and it is thicker, but it serves its purpose. I definitely feel a difference in my jaw when I forget to use it. When I wake up, my jaw feels fatigued from all the clenching if I have not worn the mouth guard.

I just got the Doctors brand of night guard today. I will try it tonight.

I get the idea now - I will still clench but into something soft so as not to harm teeth - or maybe its more the teeth are separated enough that it is not so much pressure. I will use this one.

I may eventually get one from my dentist - but will wait as I am getting a molar extracted and implant put in.

My dentist theorizes that years of braces when I was a teen (like 3 years of massive movement by the Ortho!) plus my clenching has caused this molar to have external resorption! This is the 2nd tooth for this to happen!

I (thanks to GOD!) have quite clenching during the day. I really am conscious ever minute what my teeth are doing (consciously keep them open and tongue between!). When I am tempted or find my teeth closing I breathe in and say :"when I am weak" - breathe out and say "then I am strong". AND IT WORKS.

But dentist suggested that I probably clench at night cause she says you can't stop it totally!

I hate the feeling I get of "my, what have I done to my teeth!". But I don't buy into the theory it is all stress related. I have a weird bite, always have. Braces made it worse. And with every crown it seemed to change and never be right. I think that some how triggered clenching. I read something like that once and of course the article I read said it better!

Anyway! Nice to meet fellow clenchers and know I'm not alone. I know some folks who grind - but haven't really met a clenched!
