Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Because of this, I'm trying to gather info to prepare for my surgery.

So I’m looking for ways to prepare myself for surgery, and then dealing with post-op. I don’t trust AMA (of course), so I need to be armed.

Homeopathic? Nutrition? Supplements? All suggestions very welcome.

My head is spinning with all I need to do to prepare (and thank God I can, and it’s not like a heart attack or something). I’m so worried about the “what ifs” and want to try to heal as best as I can.

alfalfa is a great and fairly cheap way to get your iron up before and after

arnica is a must.. it's a homeopathic that helps with healing and bruising and such.. it's amazing.. I've seen a child with an ankle starting to swell from a twist, take it and within 30 minutes you can't tell there was an injury. I've used it after every birth including the c-section..

bromelain (enzyme from pineapple) also help reduce swelling and speed soft tissue injury. drinking juice or eating the pineapple works too.

I don't know what restrictions you'd have... ginger works synergistically with bromelain (the two together does more than the sum of them used seperately) BUT ginger interacts with more medicines and things so I wouldn't use it without some research.

When I started looking into natural labor induction once it looked like
I might be going over my due date, what I found seemed to indicate that only fresh pineapple contained bromelain. Since it is an enzyme, the heat from the canning process is said to kill it. I had just bought a case of canned pineapple to eat postpartum, too, and though, well, at least it tastes yummy I think you can buy bromelain in supplement form, though.

It is reduced but it still helps.. and the supplement does seem to work better if you eat the fruit (canned or not) as well.

Oh and pineapple juice from concentrate isn't supposed to be heated as high as canned.

Jenn, I have to mention that lots of nutritional supplements, vitamins, etc have some untoward affects as well that impact surgery. To be completely safe, I would ask to talk to anesthesia before your surgery and ask if there are any supplements they absolutely do not want you doing pre-op. Some can increase bleeding time, etc, so be sure to check. I know it is really hard to sift through everything....believe me...I know but I would hate to hear you were taking what was thought of as completely innocent and then the day of the surgery, anesthesia and your surgeon are like, “Uh, hold on, you were taking what?”

I will pray for the Holy Spirit’s complete coverage of your surgery and course of treatment. For me...the most important thing to cover...is sleep and eating well....and of course the Sacraments. It does sound like you are in very good and capable hands.

That makes sense. I was thinking easing off the dairy and caffeine close to surgery...besides having a healthy diet.

I took alfalfa and the rest of my prenatals leading up to my c-section.. you don't want low iron.. my docs were pleasantly surprised by my iron levels considering the bleeding I'd been having.

The arnica and bromelain I started afterward.
