A friend's son just got diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and I'm hoping to help out with figuring out meals and recipes, etc. Has anyone dealt with this in children? I believe her son is 12 or 13.
Thanks for any help!!

I've had type 1 since I was six. Today's meds make it so much easier that he should be able to continue with whatever he was eating before. I try for low carb just because it makes controlling my blood sugars easier. It takes a lot of experimenting to know what foods will raise your blood sugar and how much. The doc will tell you that x, y, and z will, but everyone is different IMHO. Serving size is important.
I highly recommend finding a summer camp for diabetics. This was a life saver for me!

Stef
I have a friend who mostly manages her son's diabetes via diet and exercise. If she is interested in an alternative way I can ask her for help. She keeps talking about starting a blog and sharing her knowledge.

Yes, it is all a juggling act, but you can't get around the insulin.
Stef, at the beginning your friend will just be overwhelmed, especially emotionally. I have to say there were also many days when my brain just couldn't take in any more information. (but I admit I am very limited in that area.) You might want to get her a nifty little calculator (she probably has one...but). Diabetes is great for keeping you on your toes mathematically. Every meal time is also calculating time.
I am saying a little prayer for your friend and her son.

There's a book on the market that lists nutritional information for chain restaurant/fast food menu items. I have a friend with Type I and she carries this book with her whenever she goes out to eat. She tells me that restaurants often don't have this type of info available (even though, in our state, they are required to), and that the book helps her decide which dishes are best for her to order.

Stef,
I just Pm'd you about some support information.
Here's an articlearticle about the move to rename Type 1 (an incurable disease) so that it's not confused with the often preventable and controllable Type 2.
Since my niece was diagnosed a few years ago, I've had to learn a lot out this disease. It's definitely a roller coaster ride during the teenage years of hormone fluctuations, so you'll need to give your friend lots of support and a shoulder to cry on now and then.
I'll say a prayer for you and your friend.

Yes, she has great experience and advice. One thing I will note from her early days with the Type 1 with her children is that at the beginning the numbers really fluctuated. Their bodies were getting adjusted, and so the insulin needs also changed frequently. Once it's under control, there is more rhythm, but early on is really tough. And when the child gets sick, particularly with stomach bugs, that's another big problem.

This would be an answered prayer! You wouldn't believe what nasty things people have said to me throughout my life!
