Anyone have any remedies for chigger relief? My kids seem to have encountered some in the yard. My 16 month old has one very raised, red welt that looks uncomfortable for him. (hot to the touch..almost looks like he got a tetanus shot!) Anyway, there is a white spot in the center of this particular welt. Significant? I looked up stuff online, and contrary to popluar belief, the chigger has not actually burrowed in there, but that is possibly a feeding tube that was inserted to let the larvae feed. EEEW! Should I try to squeeze that out? Are there larva IN his leg currently? Not sure what to do. Thoughts on treatments to keep him comfortable? All the other kids are itchy too!

Frequent baths always seem to help. As you sweat it makes them itchy. Less clothes to prevent them from being rubbed and irrated by clothes. I just use over the counter anti itch cream which barely works and I would prefer something more natural.
How big is it? Are you sure it isn't a tick bite? Search that online too.

It doesn't look like a tick bite, but it DOES have a perfect circular shape, the big one, which is odd, but it is raised, like a welt, instead of the flat bulls-eye rash that my daughter had when she had lymes disease. I think the kids got bit when we said the Rosary outside the other night around the campfire which was surrounded by dirt, not any grass. They all ended up itching like crazy, so that led me to think chiggers since they are itching more than mosquitoes. Thanks for the tip!

I've always used clear nail polish, just paint right over them. I think it smothers them so they will die sooner and does help with the itching.

Nail polish. Chigger bites have the actual insect in them so the itching will go away faster once you kill the chigger. Use nail polish to cover the bite and it WILL smother them.

That is fascinating. I totally believed that chiggers went under the skin!
This article clarifies that the chigger IS the larvae of a type of mite. The larvae aren't something different.
I have good luck with rubbing alcohol and witch hazel for relieving itchiness from bug bites. Anytime it starts to especially itch, I put a little on a cotton ball and swab. Also, if the baby is super uncomfortable and is crying or can't sleep, you might try oral benedryl. In my experience, itchiness with bug bites is often a histamine reaction, but I don't have much experience with chiggers as a mom.
