Hi all,

I am suffering with both of the above foot problems. It seems to be getting worse and worse lately, so much so, that I hobble around quite a bit in the morning, after getting up from sitting, and the pain is going up my leg, and affects my knee I think from walking so strangely on it to support myself. I am picking up "orthotics" this week from a foot doc. (Things you put in your shoes.) But, when I sit, drive, or when I walk too lng, it just aches and really hurts! Anyone else have these problems and "heal" from them, or is surgery inevitable for the heel spur. Any information would be appreciated. I can't exercise very much either which is annoying. (I used to like walking each day.) I am currently overweight, so maybe that is a part of the problem too.

I have plantar fasciitis. Most of the exercises the podiatrist gave me really, really helped, as did wearing my orthotics all the time. You can do the heel dips on curbs, stairs, etc. any time you are on your feet. Staying active helps, too, although I imagine the heel spur makes exercise beyond stretching quite painful.

I was having similar pains, and thought it was both of those mentioned.

I was using orthotics, splints, lots of pain medicines.

I did find it all went away when I stopped eating wheat, and lower my intake of foods in the nightshade family (potatoes, tomatoes, peppers).

Even if it doesn't take all the pain, I would suggest trying tweaking your diet to see if it helps reduce the pain.

I'm so sorry you are going through this. Not being able to walk or be comfortable is just awful.

I'm not sure I actually have either of these but I have had foot pain on/off for the past year and in my own searching it sounds like these. I guess it's never been bad enough to warrant a trip to the ortho.

At any rate, I've used a tennis ball on the floor and rolled my foot around on it while sitting and that made almost immediate difference the next day. Also, I try not to just stand for long periods of time. For example, if I'm outside watching the kiddos and another mom comes up, sometimes we'll stand and talk for a quite a while. I've gotten to where I get a chair and sit. Just walking around house, store etc. doesn't cause as much problem as just standing in one place.

Last, a friend that had terrible foot problems said her dr. recommended ASCIS brand tennis shoes and they should be replaced approx. every 3-4 months. I didn't buy that brand last time but I did buy a good quality tennis shoe and that's about all I wear. When I wear shoes w/o good support or go barefoot, the foot pain tends to flair up.

I have had this off and on for a few years. There was one point where I kept exercising and just fighting through the pain and I really regretted that. I do find that pilates works really well for foot pain. Of course, it isn't as much cardio, but it was better than sitting on the couch. Swimming also worked for me. There is also a stretch. You sit with your legs stretched forward and your feet flexed. You use your other foot to pull back the upper part of the foot that hurts (the heel doesn't move). You can feel the stretch. It actually did reduce my pain.

The only thing that finally worked for me when it was really bad was wearing a night splint. It took a couple of months, but it did work. I haven't had it as bad since then.

I purchased these and they have really helped. I used to love a pair of New Balance shoes made specifically for Plantar Fasciatis, but they stopped making women's sizes and the the men's sizes were too wide near my toes. I started wearing these. I don't like them as much, but they do the job.

Best of luck. I am praying in empathy. It is not fun to suffer from this!!!

The tennis ball tip is one I would have suggested. Also, sitting with your feet elevated and tracing the letters of the alphabet with your feet. Stretching your feet using a towel wrapped under you foot and pulling your toes toward you helps too. You should do these exercises several times a day. And after you are done stretching, roll a frozen bottle of water under your feet to help reduce the inflammation. Anti-inflammatories help as do professionally made orthotics.

Good luck. I've been there too and these things have helped me a great deal.

I have heel spurs. I didn't know it until I had to have my foot x-rayed when I fractured it last summer. Mind you I have had plantar fascia pain for years. I only know for certain that I have heel spurs (yes more than one) in one foot but given the pain in the other foot my dr. feels certain I have them in that one too.

The main things that help control my pain are:

-Reducing sugar and grains as much as possible. JennGM mentioned this above. I hate it but it really helps.

-Losing weight. It makes sense. Not easy but yes it helps.

-Shoes that work for YOU. OK strange comment but you have to find which ones make YOUR foot feel best as I have found there is no one size fits all. For me it is Crocs which is something like a cruel joke because I love cute shoes. I wear my Crocs as much as possible and wear my cute shoes sporadically. :)

-Now this is going to sound strange but it works for a lot of people, myself and a friend included. Wear Yoga Toes to bed. You don't need the name brand, a drugstore knock off brand works just as well. This was recommended by a foot dr. who said it has something to do with the muscles being stretched. I have no idea but I do know that it helps me so it might be worth a try. Mind you I can't wear them all night. About half way through the night I have to take them off but they do still work.

I had plantars fasciitis and heel spurs really bad during my last pregnancy. The stretching helped as well as the ortho inserts. I ended up getting a cortisone shot a couple of months after I delivered and that helped almost immediantly. Hope this helps and good luck!

Oh, me too. The first time it happened it took around 6 months to heal. Most recently I finally went to a podiatrist and got prescription inserts.

I have found that I can avoid inflaming them again by:

- never going barefoot - if I have to get up during the night to use the bathroom I walk on tiptoes

- only wearing shoes with a heel so that heel is always elevated - I can't do flipflops, ballet shoes, or canvas sneakers

- after any kind of weight-bearing exercise, stretching the calf and achilles. If I forget even once the pain comes back.

I have had planters fascitis with my current and last pregnancy. I don't really have any new info. from what others have suggested, but I know weight gain is my culprit. I never walk barefoot!!! I wear Crocs as slippers around the house and wear them out as much as possible. Rolling my foot over a can or ball helps relieve pain. I had to be diligent! The second time I got it, I immediately kept off of it, and did the above. My recovery time was very quick.

My brother is in the process of possible surgery. He is a runner and has been getting cortisone shots along with other foot inserts and such.

I pray for your recovery!

Thank you all SO much for the responses! They were all very helpful, and it is nice to have some support. It has been quite debilitating. I am the type to sort of grin and bear it, and ignore my own health, I must admit..due to mainly being so busy with the littles etc., but lately it has REALLY gotten to me since it had become debilitating in so many ways. (While nursing..I think...I will get up and do such and such when finished...Oh no, wait, I can't do that because my foot will just hurt so bad." That sort of thing. Interesting about the night shade family! I eat A LOT of potatoes and diced tomatoes in pretty much all my dishes!!! Also, I had been considered giving up white flour and sugar as a way to lost weight, but maybe it is making things hurt. (My knee is swollen and hurts a lot from a fall on my kitchen floor, (because I have to wear shoes in there due to the tile all the time now, and if there is the slightest wet spot...BOOM! down I go!!!) so that might help that too.)
