Well, I have my first cold sore. DH has had them for years and I've been waiting for my turn. Anyone have any suggestions? I am 35 weeks pregnant and spoke with my midwives. They said Abreva is fine (DH swears by it), but I thought I would see if anyone here had any success in treating them with something different.

I used Walgreens/generic brand and it works like a charm! I also learned that it means the body is "heated" and needs to be cooled. So upon suggestion, I regularly eat and drink barley, which cools the body, and I haven't had a cold sore in a long time.
Good fortune with the rest of the pregnancy!

increase your vitamins (2 prenatals?)
take L-Lysine
and take olive leaf extract (500-1000 mg per day)
I get them when I am pregnant or just have a new baby and am worn down. They are the pits. Feel better!

Laura, Interesting about cooling th body! I will look into that, since I now know I need to be on top of this.
Marcia, My midwife mentioned L-Lysine, but I had never heard of it before. After checking on-line, I may pick some up.
Thank you, Ladies. Yes, this is the pits...never know what I'm going to see when I look in the mirror.

There is a lot to learn about managing cold sores. If anyone is interested, here is a site with cold sore friendly recipes: Recipes for Fighting Cold Sores
I would think these can be great when your sick or stressed, when an outbreak is more common to occur.
You have to balance out foods high in Lysine and low in Arginine which are two essential amino acids. When I thought of what I ate just the day before my outbreak, I found almost everything on the arginine side.
