So what else besides motrin/tylenol and maybe warm salt water rinse - to relieve the pain after getting the braces on.

pineapple smoothie.. the pineapple helps reduce the inflammation (and so the pain) and speed healing. Ginger also helps that way and a bit of fresh grated ginger in a pineapple smoothie can be good.
the homeopathic Arnica may also help.

The best thing for my dd was the ibuprofen (motrin) and tylenol and extra time to sleep. to your newly-in-braces person!!!

And soft/mushy food for a day or two, not just when the braces go on but each time the archwires are changed or the rubber bands are added/tweaked.

Yep, hugs to the braces-wearer. We just did milkshakes, smoothies, soup, and ibuprofen initially, and since then (we're about 16 months into braces now), some readjustments have been worse than others. Lately it hasn't been nearly as bad as in the beginning, when they were hauling things into place in a major way.
As with menstrual cramps, for example, it really helps to be able to take the ibuprofen *before* the pain really sets in. My son had to cut all food into tiny bites for a good while, too, even after he could manage things other than liquids.
Can't think of anything else we did specifically that was helpful. After our more recent wisdom-teeth experience (with another child, not the braces-wearer), braces seem kind of tame by comparison, though the braces-wearer might beg to differ! I suppose if the braces discomfort was really bad, things like ice packs might help, too, but my son didn't seem to need anything that extreme.

My 13yods just got braces in October. It took about 5 days for his teeth to start feeling well enough to bite into things. We stuck with soup, shakes, mac and cheese, pudding, jell-o...that sort of stuff.
We used ibuprofen, too. Some folks have suggested orajel, but we didn't use it.
