Does anyone else have non-pregnancy related hair loss? My hair is noticeably thinning along my hairline around my face and in the bangs area, top middle.
My gynocologist told me not to waste my money on baldness remedies.
I do not believe there is a cure for my situation, so I need to just deal with it. I wear hats a lot, but not inside. I do need a good hair cut for sure but I have been putting it off.
Anyone been there already and / or have any tips?

(I used to be flattered often on my pretty hair. Now I am overweight and going bald) Vanity!!!

I think I recall that this can also be a symptom of thyroid problems, as well as weight gain. Maybe you should check this out with an endocrinologist? Or at least an internist?

My thyroid is fine and I do not have pcos. Last year I had lots of testing done to see if there was something wrong in those areas. I think my hair loss is hereditary.
Does anyone else do hats or hair pieces?

I think I've read that hair loss can be the result of "free radicals" and that can be helped by increasing your antioxidants.

Stephanie,
I too started to suffer from very mild non-pregnancy hair loss a few years ago. My hair just kept falling out and breaking with a snap. I talked to my hairdresser about it and she asked me what shampoo I was using. I think it might have been Garnier Fructuse or something like that at the time, but apparantly some shampoos can actually cause your hair to be brittle and to start falling out! I switched to a different shampoo and it does seem to have helped. Also, you mentioned needing a haircut. Is your hair too long and pulling on it from the scalp? I know the hair gets fragile as we age, hence the reason most older women, around 40ish, usually end up cutting their hair shorter, I think. Mine is still longish, but maybe a shorter and layed look would help hide it more? Try switching shampoos too or maybe talk to a dermatologist pehaps? Good luck.

This is all good advice. I thought I'd add something. I too have suffered extremely dry & brittle hair no matter what I "do" with it. I've had an ongoing issue of dandruff (so embarrassing) & I swear it has thinned out too, but I think it is getting better since I started doing some things differently.

My mom is a hairstylist and I've spoken to her about this. First, I'll note that you should definitely check with your doctor first and foremost for any underlying health issues that could be the problem. I was tested for a thyroid issue, but the results were fine. Also, I agree to be careful about which hair products you are using. I'm all for natural, but when I say that I actually mean natural, lol.

I sometimes use mayonnaise as a conditioner if I don't have anything "fancier" and I swear by it. The eggs make it a great protein-rich luxury for the hair. Hot oil treatments are wonderful. Rosemary, tea tree, coconut & olive oil are wonderful for the hair. So is chamomile. Tea tree is wonderful if you have an issue with dandruff. Olive oil is not nice to rinse out, lol, and it seems to take me a couple times, but it's worth it because my hair ends up a lot healthier after doing it.

Stress & nutrition have a huge effect on our hair! Take vitamins if you need to at least for awhile, but it's very important to make sure you are eating well & your stress levels are not sky high. These factors CAN cause hair loss, dandruff & dry, brittle hair. I believe this was my problem along with too much stress on the hair from dying and getting layers. My mom warned me not to do home colours, but I stubbornly went ahead and did it, lol. What a mistake! Now I am sticking to frequent trims and no colour until that nasty old hair grows out!

I had a problem related to stress last year and I had bald spots on my crown/bang area. My mom paid for me to have treatments at the beauty school nearby and they did something called the "Rake Treatment" on me. It's a rake tool that has ultraviolet light... it worked wonders! It was $8.00 a week, so if you can find something like that near you, you might want to try it out. I went for six weeks in a row and then monthly for a few months. It was a lifesaver, all my hair grew back, and the whole thing was extremely relaxing.

Robin, I have never heard of a "rake treatment". That seems so doable and relatively affordable. I will ask around if something like that is available here. Why havn't any of my doctors in Germany mentioned this before???

Kim, regarding short hair: I always dreamed of being a grandma with long hair rolled up in a bun. Simple, inexpensive and no fuss. I am so not a weekly go to the hairdressers type of gal. In any case a good haircut is necessary.

Vitamins, ah yes, now where did I put them???

Hi Savvymom, I really don't have dry and brittle hair. The root of the problem is the follicles. I was told that they are losing their power to produce and hold onto hair. My hair is soft and fine to begin with. Now really baby fine hair is all that is left in the bad spots, where the follicles are just losing gas.

Stephanie,

A couple of years ago I came to this board and asked the same thing and someone recommended Biotin. I bought a shampoo and conditioner at drugstore.com that contained it and started drinking biotin pills from my local vitamin store and it worked AMAZINGLY!!!!

I do have to admit that I cut my hair shorter. The pulling my hair into a ponytail was doing my hair quite a number and when I went to the hairdresser she was in shock at just how much of my hair I had lost. ( I like you have always had long, pretty hair) She told me the same thing about pulling from the follicles.

Sorry no advice on the hat or hairpiece either. I have heard though that covering your hair sometimes causes even more loss because of the strain to pull it back and into something. Good luck and many prayers since I know this must be a tough situation for you.

Sorry to hear that Stephanie. That Biotin sounds worth looking into. Great info here.

Kombucha! I had gotten away from brewing it, but my hair grew well and actually looked much healthier when I drank it. I just ordered my new culture today. It is amazing the difference this drink makes me feel. I have a huge need for this in my diet and I surely miss it. Will never run out of this again, I tell ya!
I ordered mine from here today:

I feel your pain. This started happening to me about 2 years ago. It is quite upsetting. I suggest getting all blood work done that you can to rule out anything medical. I did this and they found nothing.

I now take a supplement called Stimulair, drink Amazing Grass green powder, GT's Kombucha, and Lugol's Iodine. I have stopped losing hair and have a little regrowth...but my hair is very very thin still.

I hide my thin hair by using Toppik (it really works) and Great Hair Day by Joan Rivers. If you can only purchase one, I would buy Toppik.

I haven't gotten to the point of wigs yet, but I have decided if that day comes, I'm going to rock it out. I'm going to wear a different color wig for each day of the week. Might as well make it as fun as possible.

((hug))

My hair was falling out a lot this past year - luckily i've always had thick hair so it wasn't noticeable to others, but I'd get huge amounts of hair when brushing/washing, etc. It was exactly like post-partum in that respect. I do have a thyroid problem already and I had to switch doctors b/c my previous one wasn't treating it enough, but even after getting my TSH back down to a good level, the hair continue to fall out. My doctor checked my ferritin levels (iron stored in the bone marrow, not just regular iron) and I was extremely low. I've been on iron supplements for a few months now and the hair stopped falling out.

Had my sweet baby 3 months ago, but my hair loss has started again! Every time I shower, I notice a lot and it is always on my shirt etc. So annoying and disconcerting. My MIL has had success with Biotin (B7) I was wondering, is it o.k. to take this while nursing? Does anyone know what the recommended amount it? Thanks for any help. Last time, before I got pregnant again, it got pretty thin in one spot! Trying to avoid that.

I also had hair loss awhile back and the usual thyroid test always came back in the lower part of the normal range--but I had practically ALL the symptoms of low thyroid.

When supplemented with thyroid in spite of the "normal" test results my diet began to work, I began to sleep better and my hair stopped falling out.

So just because the test comes back normal does not mean you do not have thyroid issues, it just means THAT TEST was unable to detect your particular thyroid issue.

Kim, I also have Biotin 5mg and looked at the accompanying information. There was no mention whatsoever of risks during pregnancy or nursing. I would ask my pharmacist just to make sure.

Ditto this! This, weight gain, and hair growth in strange places for a woman were symptoms of my PCOS...which went undiagnosed for YEARS until the hair loss got so bad I finally INSISTED that the military docs do their job and test me for it.

My thyroid is fine, btw, too.

I am going through this issue right now. My hair started falling out at an alarming rate about a month ago. This was preceded by a few days of intense scalp itching. It was so bad that it looked like a baby mouse in the tub drain!

I saw my regular doc two weeks ago who ordered a plethora of blood work to check for thyroid and autoimmune disease, hormone levels (because in addition to the hair loss on the top of my head, I started to get quite a bit of facial and arm hair and I'm peri-menopausal) and anemia. I also saw a dermatologist last week who prescribed a steroid shampoo to use three times a week. It seems to be helping as my hands are not coated with hair when shampooing.

See a doctor since it could be a sign of something more serious. And hopefully it's just an irritated scalp that can be helped easliy.
