I am struggling with anemia. I have been at various degrees of severity for literally years. The only time I was truly not anemic was when pregnant. Kind of ironic. Right now the last 5 years have been the worst. My iron store is nearly non existent, the CBC comes pack of great concern. To me this is 'normal', but I am tired of being tired, fatigued, no energy, mental fog.
I have tried nearly everything. Supplements, iron injections(OUCH). I do have mild hypothyroiditis, but it is treated and balanced. I've tried acupuncture, naturopath. I just don't know what to do.
I've an appointment at the obgyn in a couple weeks. I do have a rather 'violent' menstrual cycle which started after an emergency d&c. That doesn't help, however, I was anemic before then too.
My GP wants me to use bcp, the marina IUD or get a uterine ablation. I don't feel that any of these are options for me, if there is still a chance I can conceive, even though dh had a vasectomy(A decision he made without me :( He is not Catholic) I want to be open to that small possibility. I don't feel the family is complete yet. I have had an ultrasound already, and there is no fibroids. So I don't feel that there will be anything presented that will be useful. That I'm taking a day away from the kids for no reason to see the obgyn.
But I don't know what else to do.

what sort of supplements have you tried? I mean, have you tried something like floradix? which is all plant based, or alfalfa.
Is your diet high if phosporus? that depletes iron.
prolonged us of antiacids?
ulcers?
excessive coffee/tea?
Did you supplement your B vitamins and vitamin C as well as iron?

Floradix didn't budge my levels. I've tried Fer-in-Sol(EWW) no result. I've tried various other brands, including the expensive new one - Proferrin, and again, no change.
I don't take antacids, herbal teas to help build blood. Maybe 1 cup of coffee a week. I don't drink much milk, no soy. The only higher phosphorus foods I might have a raw peas, and they are so costly up here, it's more of a treat.
There is no ulcer.

The book Fertility Cycles and Nutrition by Marilyn Shannon has information on using nutrition to moderate heavy cycles and such.. maybe it would have something that would work for you to slow the heavy cycles and help with the anemia.

I tend to be anemic and have had similar recommendations from my doctor, but have always gotten the anemia under control. One thing that helps *tons* is to take cayenne pepper tablets several times a day during my period. This dramatically decreases the blood flow and clotting.
Another thing that has helped me dramatically when I've been at my worst is to take a sublingual B vitamin complex. If you have pernicious anemia, the amount of B12 in supplements (including the Floradix) isn't enough to help your body. You're not able to absorb the B12 efficiently. Liquid B complexes contain much, much more B12 and are better absorbed.

The only thing I can think of is asking about the minerals that allow copper to be absorbed. I had an ongoing problem with anemia and after researching, took a chelated copper supplement to cure it. It's worth a try.

Go to a Napro Trained doctor (trained at Pope Paul VI institute) who will try to help you ethically get to the reasons for your cycles. Click on medical consultants on the left of this link to find one in your area.

Sounds like you don't drink soda- but especially diet sodas can be high in phosphorous, which is bad for everything: calcium, vit, d, iron, etc

I was reluctant on the IUD, but dh said to give it a go. So this summer, I returned to have it put in.
I had a check up today, and everything is doing well. He said that 50% of women in the 6-12 month window, nearly stop their period. That would make me happy after the last 8 years of a, what I call, violent period that lasted 12 days.

Wow! You have been through a lot! It sounds like you took the right path. It sounds like such a relief for you and a that you have some peace of mind. It's very interesting the things that we go through and how we all have different challenges to work through, but it usually makes us better in the end.
God bless you and your family!
