For those of you who wear compression hose during pregnancy, do you automatically buy new hose with each pregnancy?
I know it depends on how much you wear them, how many pair, and for how long....so here are my stats last time around (2.5 years ago):
:: I had 2 pair
:: 20-30 mmHg
:: Wore them 7 am - 8 pm, pretty much every day for the last 5 months of pregnancy.
I bought them in Dec. 2007....so they've "existed" for at least 2.5 years....which maybe has an impact too...elastic/rubber breaks down with time, right?
I've been wearing my old ones for the past couple of months...just b/c I haven't gotten my act together to place an order and it's been summer. And, my legs are not "that" achy or painful yet (I'm 5.5 months pregnant.) The varicose veins are definitely worse on my right leg, like usual.
I'm waffling for obvious reasons....they ain't cheap! But, if veteran-wrapped-up-goddesses tell me to get new ones, then I will!!!!!

I had to wear hose this time around and found Ames Walker brand hose were in my price range. Honestly, they worked out great for me. I wore them daily from waking until going to bed for about 4 1/2 months. The 206 style was heavier weight, but held up to mom-of-7-other-little ones wear. The sheers ripped within a day or 2...the name brand sheers only lasted 4 or 5 days before snagging or ripping (thank God for a good return policy from Ames Walker!). I tried on and returned many a pair before settling with the 206 maternity ones. Honestly, they were NOT pretty - they looked and felt like support hose, but they made my life bearable and made me able to be a mommy rather than be stuck on the couch with my sore legs up.
God bless,
Christine

Suzanne, I don't buy new ones until my old ones fall apart. I have two pair of Bauerfiend that are no longer made that I keep sewing back together! I don't think the compression has lessened any. I will end up buying another pair,probably Jobst, just so I can have some that aren't sewn up for times I wear dress shoes or dresses.
By the way, I just bought a pair of the Ames Walker hose because of the really low price. They felt good on my legs and have a nice big belly, BUT there is a thick elastic waist band that I immediately knew I wouldn't be able to stand. I will probably hold on to them for the post-partum days when my legs still need support.

Christine~ Thanks for linking to Ames Walker....I didn't know about them! And, $25!!!@#$%$# It would also make me more able to buy another pair a few months post-partum....certainly not as painful on the pocketbook. I wasn't happy with my post=partum-thigh-highs last time around.....I kept having to pull them up....they just didn't stay-put well enough. I need full hose, I think.
Molly~ I'm so HAPPY that is your feedback!!!!! I can think of a lot of better things to spend money on right now! And, as long as they are helping, I guess they are doing the job. And, I never even thought about sewing up my black ones that are starting to come undone in one area. I'm imagining a darning method.

Would you look at the close-up picture of these? It doesn't look like the waistband is more than 1.5 inches....similiar to my current waistband, which I think are Jobst. Does that look different than the Ames Walker pair you ordered before?

Thanks for this post. It got me rolling on getting these this time around and it has made a huge difference in these last 2 mos. of pregnancy. My legs were hurting so much, and now I can stand without hurting again. They also make you feel more awake with their bettering of circulation.
BTW for those looking into getting these, I would see if your health insurance covers these, at least partially, ours did, and I'm so glad I looked into. My Doc gave me a prescription for them, and I got it filled at a home medical supplier. HTH.

I use mediven. I started out with jobst back in 1989. Then someone told me about medi. I prefer the thigh high with the silicone band at the top - sure helps with all the trips to the bathroom during pregnancy! During pregnancy I use 30 to 40 mmHg, but in between pregnancies (during my cycles) I change to 20 to 30. At that time I like their option of sheer and soft which look more like regular hose.
With a prescription, our insurance helps a lot. It is worth checking into!
I try to replace mine when I get a hole anywhere including the heel/foot area as not doing so has added to varicosities around my ankle!!!! NOT GOOD!
I am just another varicose vein queen! Feel free to ask all your varicose vein questions here!
