Ds ran track this spring. I "planned" on running during his practice's. It was too far to trek home and back to pick him up. My goal was to at least being able to jog a comfortable mile by the end of the season.   Tomorrow is the championship (last) meet and I can walk one mile. My lower back, right knee and my left hip hurt and I feel sooooo old.
I am only 47 by the way   
Part of my problem was my dd and trying to keep her happy for the hour and a half practice. She was tired as she was getting to bed later due to practice. I had to cut her some slack, we did this 3 nights a week.
The other was my body.
So, I need to hear some stories. Some successes. I have no more babies and should be able to do this. Does anyone know any gentle programs to start out?
I tried the couch to 5K program on my treadmill last winter and failed. I even did the workout for 2 weeks instead of one and at week 4 my knee was so sore.
I think it is arthritis--oh, joy.
So, inspire me. Please?

PS--I have always been athletic swimming on a swim team from age 8, baseball, high school swimming, basketball, and softball. Dh and I met at a triathlon--I did those in my 20's. This is hard for me.....and watching my kids and so wishing I could be a little more...limber and fast...

If it is arthritis, you might not be able to run the way you once did, but you can certainly stay fit. Water aerobics, exercise bikes, walking...those are your beginnings.

My dh loves to run but his knees are giving out (surgery on each, already) and so he sticks with the elliptical, weight lifting and other lower-impact exercises and strength-training activities.

Were I you, I might start at my doctor's office. Knowing whether you do have osteoarthritis will help you choose the best exercise program.

My dh says that glucosamine supplements really do work...another idea.

You can stay fit without running, but you might need professional advice to develop the best exercise program for you.

I completely empathize...we are the same age and I keep hoping to stay with a fitness program, only to develop one health issue after another (heel spur, bronchitis, etc.). It is very frustrating. I hope some other moms our age will chime in with ideas.

Part of the problem could be your shoes too. I used to have terrible knee problems when I ran until I went to a local running shop and had them assess my gait and get me into the right shoes for my feet. That was a few years ago. I've been running pain free ever since.

It really is worth it to spend a little more (at least for the first pair) to have the confidence that you're in good shoes. Once you know their recommendations, you can look for them cheaper elsewhere.
