Does anyone know of anthing that I should have on hand right now that can soothe a bad diaper rash? My 2yo actually woke up because it hurt so bad. We've used coconut oil, I can't find the lanolin, and I"m afraid to go near him with diaper rash creams. I've heard that maloxx or mylanta works, but its 11pm and I don't want to send dh out for it if its not going to work.
Any thoughts?? TIA!!!

Is the diaper rash oozing sores, or just very, very inflamed?
Do you have any antibacterial cream, like bacitracian or neosporin? I'd use that as the base especially if you have broken skin.
Then I just ooze on Aquaphor or Vaseline on top. Usually Desitin and Aquaphor (or Vaseline) is my dynamic duo.

I don't think that the skin is broken, but its very red. I know for myself, I've used neosporin, and that hurts, but I have a triple antibiotic cream-- maybe that will be more soothing?

I know the docs nowadays recommend against powders, but we dealt with really bad diaper rashes for years with our little guy before we discovered his food intolerance-- what worked? Burt's Bees Baby Powder. Or at least, it worked better than the creams we tried.
Praying for your little one! Those rashes must be so painful!

Unless you have something that actually "deadens" the pain, like Dermoplast or Neosporin spray, the initial touching of anything is going to hurt.
If he's in so much pain, perhaps a soak in the tub with Aveeno or oatmeal to sooth?
Calamine lotion is another soother.
After the initial layer of soothing, then you need a moisture barrier, like Vaseline or Desitin or Aquaphor. Thick, thick.

We always keep Desitin on hand for times like this and we pile it on - thick. But, there is a new Desitin out now. It's more of a cream instead of that thick, paste. The cream really made my baby scream. I think there is another ingredient in it that stings. The paste (made with zinc-oxide) is always soothing though.

This is probably too late to help, but wanted to add our treatment that is similar to Jennifer's...
I've always had lots of success with A&D ointment covered with Desitin. I've used bacitracin, too, if there is broken skin. The bacitracin goes on smoothly and easily, not as hard to put on as the A&D and Desitin, which I used to warm in my hands to get them more pliable for those poor little sore bums.

Sometimes when the baby's bottom is really sore and irritated, the clean-up from a dirty diaper can hurt. At times like that I have done the clean-up with baby oil and cotton balls, very gently. A couple of my children have had a yeast diaper rash, which needed to be treated with a prescription. Can you let him be bare-bottomed for at least some of the time, especially letting him expose his sore skin to sunlight?
Poor little guy; this is miserable.

Ah yes, Stacy, A&D, my other mainstay. I don't like the Desitin Creamy, just stick to the other, because it stays on and it really does soothe.

Something strange that worked brilliantly for us was...egg. Beat up a raw egg and smear over rash then cover with vaseline or zinc cream.
Of course, just do a bit at first to see if there will be a reaction. I'm sure it won't work for everyone. But this was the only thing that worked on a rash that we tried everything on. And it worked pretty fast and it didn't hurt going on.

The best thing that I have found for diaper rashes is coconut oil. I buy organic coconut oil and use it for cooking, as hand moisturizer, and to soothe baby's bottoms. It does a better job than anything else that I have tried.

I actually think the best thing for a diaper rash is a saltwater "sitz" bath, and then simply leaving the diaper off for a period of time after each diaper change.
If the child is small enough, you can use the kitchen sink. Just let him sit in some salted water and just let him play for a while.
Then let him air dry and walk around for a while without his diaper.

if you suspect yeast.. a good yogurt can be soothing.
It's not on hand, but then it's not middle of the night anymore.. we use an herbal antibiotic cream for lack of a better description.. it's wonderful stuff.. rarely does it irritate going on.. and we use it on cuts and scrapes etc as well as rashes.. it has some of the good oils in it and it helps things heal really well.

Thank you all for your advice! That night, while I was running around the house trying to figure out what to do for him, my husband sat up with him in our bedroom watching Curious George. When I went back in, Will was asleep, with his head on dh's lap, with his bare little tushie stuck up in the air!  We ended up putting him down on our floor with a bunch of towels under him (and a plastic bag over the carpet) with his rear end exposed. That helped a lot, and I've been smearing him wtih Butt Paste ever since. He has a problem digesting dairy, and he'd gotten into the kids' yougurt the day before.
Thanks again, and I'm keeping all those remedies on hand in the house for the next time!

Anne I just saw this and was going to post Air as the #1 treatment 
also if it starts to act up again chamomile tea wash is wonderful it helps with infection too for eyes or anything in very young just for future reference 
at least it is spring/ summer now so maybe with less diaper wear it will not be so bad .
