Would you please pray for one of our children who has lice? We've shampooed them out with the lice shampoo..now we've got the task of finding and removing ALL their nits(eggs) before they rehatch. And any advice would be appreciated!
Thank you!

depending on the length of hair.. get it combed out nicely.. then go over it with a finer toothed comb.. and then use the nit comb.. keeps you from running into snags in the hair and and it easier on the poor head.

My kids have had them twice---the second time is chronicled in the 2nd of the two threads Angie linked above. I battled them with the LiceMeister comb and countless rounds of nitpicking.

But it seems there's a new approach now that involves coating the hair with Cetaphil cleanser. I read about it in this thread on Light and Momentary. There are links there to the method. What I found most interesting was the notion that nitpicking is actually not necessary! It seems the nits may be *empty* egg cases, not unhatched eggs. This makes sense, since the nits are found glued to hairs near, but not directly on, the scalp. Apparently that's because the hair has grown a little bit since the louse laid the egg.

When I think of all the hours I spent tweezing nits off my kids heads...oy! I hope I never have occasion to test the Cetaphil method, but it's nice to know there's a less nitpicky alternative.

My girls have had it twice. Once when Kayleigh was 4th grade and Chels was a baby (with little hair) and then again last year when all three girls had long hair. Can we all say NIGHTMARE!

My nieces have had it more than once and my mom is firm believer in vaseline and shower caps and overnight treatment.

Vaseline was a NIGHTMARE! We used mineral oil.

Anyway, I agree that---short of coal oil and shearing---finetooth combing and nit picking are the only ways to eliminate this plague. Stick a good movie in DVD and enjoy the time spent picking out nits.

Something I have not tried but is another option, this is what my niece texted me last year on my cell phone. I saved it...just incase.

"Aunt Cay,
I used the Rid first but that wasn't so great. I soaked her hair with scope and wrapped it with a trash bag for an hour and a half. She rinsed her hair then I poured lots of vinegar on her scalp. Mayo clinic says the vinegar's acid breaks down what ever holds them to the hair shaft. Most of them were gone after the scope and vinegar treatment."

Someone I know has been through this several times. She says it's best (by a long shot) to use a metal comb, not the plastic one.

She tried cetaphil and a bunch of other stuff but they kept finding lice again. They dealt with this for months and finally what really worked best for the girls with long hair was to use listerine (google "listerine lice treatment") and it worked. She did the listerine for 4 weeks, once a week.

I admit my family tried kerosene to kill the little nits. Yuck. That really burned. We had the long, long hair and walked around in shower caps to keep the bugs from jumping around.

DD's godmother used Listerine and vinegar (back to back, not together, but on the same day) and then went after the nits.
