My first daughter is 18 mo. and has darling shoulder-length hair.
I always take out her ponytails & barrettes for sleeping, because I recall them pulling as a child. And then, the hair gets in her face & eyes.
So what do you do? Do you think it bothers them to have them in?

Barettes, yes I took them out. Ponytails not always, especially if they were french braids that were close to the head.

In my experience if they don't want them in.. they won't stay in. 
So if it's uncomfortable I would expect that the child would take them out quite handily.
And I would find a ponytail or such that pulled up/back tightly to be very uncomfortable over time, myself.
But that said.. I sleep in a braid and encourage but don't require my girls to sleep with them. so many fewer tangles!

I always take out my daughters' ponytail holders and barrettes at bedtime because I'm afraid they'll become a choking hazard overnight. Neither my three year old nor my one year old seems bothered at all my hair in her face (whether awake or asleep)--not sure why!

When our dd was the same age as yours she put a hairtie around her wrist during naptime, it was cutting off her circulation. I felt a strong urge(from her Guardian Angel I believe) to check on her. I found it just in time, her hand was cold and turning a ghastly color! 
After that I never left anything in her hair at naptime. otherwise, as far as when she got a little older, I usually left her hair up at naptime, and if it was uncomfortable she was sure to take it down herself. 
An idea to help keep her hair out of her face when you take it down is to run a slightly wet comb or brush through it. It might help keep her hair back until she can fall asleep.

a soft headband might work for keeping hair back with little discomfort too?
