At my OB appointment last night I discovered that I have an anterior placenta. The midwife couldn't find the baby's heartbeat (a bit heart-stopping for me), but one of the other midwives was able to do a quick ultrasound. The baby is healthy and active -- but the placement of the placenta is muffling the heartbeat and keeping me from feeling movement. I'm nearly 17 weeks and usually I feel movement really, really early, so... this is definitely weird for me.
At this point I don't think anything is wrong, although my big ultrasound in 3 weeks will provide more detail. I do know that anterior placentas can potentially cause a few problems with C-sections, and that there is a risk of an anterior placenta growing into the scar(s) from previous C-sections.
Since this is new for me, I'm wondering... if the placenta is anterior, when can you expect to feel movement? Is it always so hard to hear the baby's heartbeat? If you had previous C-sections and/or had the baby via C-section, did an anterior placenta give you any trouble?
Just trying to figure out what is reasonable to expect.

Angela,
I've had this with both my pregnancies, but the placenta was also very low, so I had previa also.
Not having anything else to compare, I'll just say I felt movement and nothign was different except to the previa and the c-sections. PM me if you want the details.

With my second I had an anterior placenta (high, though, so not previa). I did not feel any movement but very small flutters until around 18 or so weeks, and even then, it was less frequent than usual until I hit around 22 weeks, if I remember right. For the later part of my pregnancy, I really didn't notice any difference at all when it came to movement or the doctor's ability to find the heart beat--things evened out at that point. I haven't had a C-section, so I can't comment on that.

My placenta was anterior with the twins and if I recall correctly, I didn't start feeling a lot of movement until after 20 weeks.

I have had an anterior placenta. high if I remember right.. and at first I felt the movement on my sides, I don't recall that it was real late, but it wasn't as strong a feeling and it was me feeling it inside.. not being able to feel it by putting your hand there you know.. and the further along I got the more space there was for me to feel baby plus the baby's movements got stronger and so were easier to feel.
And my midwife was always able to find the heartbeat.. she worked from the sides to be able to "see" under the placenta.

My placenta was anterior with my last 2. I felt movement really early with my 2yo but not as early this last time. With my 2yo it wasn't tough to find the hb, but with Veronica my mw had troubles getting her hb most times even when she was bigger. It doesn't help that my children tend to lay posterior (I think that is the term) so that their back is towards my back. I never had a section so I don't know anything about that.

With #6ds, I had my first c-section, and my placenta was anterior. I was nervous, but my ob reassured me that everything would be fine. It was not a planned c-sxn, but ds decided to dangle a foot! Ds and I had zero complications!
God Bless,
