Please tell me what you consider the standard, must take vitamins for busy moms during these cold dreary months of winter. And, if you can recommend a brand and why, I would appreciate it.

Those are all good suggestions.. I really like my sublingual vit. B's.. the taste can be a bit hmmm tart I guess is the best I can come up with.. but they really make a difference. I'll look for the name of it here when I'm not decorated with several children

Lindsey's suggestions were all good ones. You do want to be sure you're not taking too much of some things when you start adding to a multi-vit though.. so I would check on the vit. D.. I don't recall if it's one you shoudl be careful on.. but fish oils have vit D and so do the prenatals so...

And take the calcium and iron at different times.. they'll block each other.

Excellent point, Jodie! I also take my vitamin C and Iron at the same time to help with absorption.

I don't know what I would do without Floradix right now. I'm prone to anemia anyway, and it has gotten me through several pregnancies, and I'm sure it's helping with my current situation. I also take CLO and my Shaklee vitalizer. And LOTS of water.

Lisa I started these after my miscarriage this summer with high blood loss.. they really help rebuild and protect against depression (from lack of proper vits) and stress.

How do you determine the proper dosage? Some of these vites have 150%, 250%, 1000% of RDA. I read my Prescription for Nutritional Healing as well as other sources and I am nothing but CONFUSED. Sometimes I just take the least amount of something just to be sure I'm not overdosing myself.

I love, just love Emergen-C. Our whole family takes it. I like it because it is not a pill but powder you mix in water. The orange flavor is the best. It tastes lovely in a banana smoothie. They are easy to travel with. you can purchase in health food stores or some grocery stores. They run about $15.00 per package.

I don't like pills. I feel like they mostly go in one end and out the other:)

Stef, if you read what the RDA is.. it is the minimum doseage to prevent deficiency disease. So the RDA is generally the least amount you should be getting. Note also that it does not prevent *deficiency* but the *disease* associated with deficiency.

Some vits it doesn't matter (unless you're pregnant).. like vit C.. Your body might object to large doses (intestinal upset or such) but you won't really hurt yourself with large amounts..

I find that the amounts listed in Prescription for Nutrional Healing are very reasonable. Prenatal vitamins like Rainbow Light Complete, NF Formulas Prenatal Forte etc tend to line up with those amounts.

I also notice that Prescription for Nutritonal Healing will tell you the "do not exceed" dose.. and they also mention ones you need to be more careful of in pregnant (either by needing more or needing to not get too much)l

Then to confuse things further, the better forms (Prescription for Nutritional Healing says what those are too) you can use less than with the others.

But you shouldn't take more than 1000IU Vit D a day.. it combines with calcium and can cause a decrease in bone mass.

When pregnant you shouldn't take more than 5000mg Vit. C a day.

Those are the numbers I look for.. and then within those.. if more vit D would be good, or more vit B I may take more of those. B's are good for countering depression and stress.. and so is D especially in the winter and the further North and the less sunshine you get. I understand there's a point that even if you were out in the sunshine a lot you can be far enough North that you can not get enough D from sunlight in the winter.

Prescription for Nutritional Healing also has a nice list of targets for a the amount of vits for good health. Those are great starting points. Then if you need more in some areas (like vit. D) you can look at those amounts and adjust them.

We really like cod liver oil though we don't have it on hand now. We also use Emergen-C quite a bit--especially if someone is sick. A box at Trader Joe's is only $7.99.

I've read and heard many things lately about how we are all probably more D-deficient than we think. Interesting, because I think this is one of the "forgotten" vitamins that we assume we are getting enough of....

It supposedly really helps with mood and immunity to increase it to at least 400 IU a day.

My CF two, despite ADEK supplements and time outdoors, are consistently low on Vitamin D. It is just a fat-soluble vitamin that they have a hard time absorbing for some reason. Frustrating.

How do you all get your D? Milk? Sunshine?   In supplements?

Hi Nina,

We all get our Vitamin D in supplement form (in the winter). Carlson's D-Drops come in 400 IU, 1000 IU, and 2000 IU drops. I just add it to my water, or water for the kids, juice, etc. Or you can just drop on food as well. It doesn't have a taste at all.

In the spring, summer, and most of the fall (I'm in WA state), we spend a minimum of 30 minutes outside without sunscreen. Interesting fact about Vitamin D via the sunshine, it can be washed off, so don't jump into the shower right after spending some time getting your D in the sun !

Blessings,
Chris

Thank you so much, Chris. I think I'll try those.

I realized that I meant 1000 IU, not 400, which is the RDA anyway.

Where do you all get these for reasonable prices?

we tend to use vitacost. it seems to consistently have the lowest prices. the service is usually very fast for us, we have never had any problems, etc. much cheaper than local health food stores.

Yes, vitacost. They are much cheaper than going to any store I have found.

Is it ok to take the sub-lingual B's during pregnancy? I usually take them when I'm not pregnant for energy &depression but stopped because I wasn't sure if I could take those mega doses of B's while pregnant. I really could use the extra energy now being 14 weeks pregnant with #9.
A few years ago my doctor recommended to me to take iodide/iodine supplements due to losing so much blood while delivering so many times. I take it,I THINK it helps:)Not sure what the effects of low iodide are?
But I HIGHLY recommend the fish oils too, they are great in so many ways. I read somewhere that women will take high doses of them few days before going out to an event because the oil build up is supposed to really smooth out wrinkles.interesting.
