Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone ever discussed with a good pro-life health care provider or a priest or read something from a reliable source that addressed thoroughly the facts about and/or moral considerations related to a potential risk of implantation failure (not a miscarriage after a pregnancy has been confirmed) after conception because of the influence of breastfeeding? Can you give me an idea what they said or point me to some reading?

Here is a brief reference from Kellymom.com: "If you are still transitioning to full fertility (as discussed above), breastfeeding may affect the success of implantation. Once implantation is successful, breastfeeding should not affect a healthy pregnancy[.]" I can't provide all the details on the subject but if you're unfamiliar, just Google and you'll soon find some. I am so completely, totally, seriously uninterested in somehow starting a debate so I am hoping this is not going to be controversial to even mention. But it's something about which I'd like to have more solid and knowledgeable Catholic understanding.

I know a midwife who pointed out that the oxytocin receptors are not receptive until later in a pregnancy, so since the only thing that breastfeeding does is release oxytocin.. it really can't do anything.. and then later in a pregnancy the oxytocin level remains pretty much the same and doesn't do much unless you have problems in addition to the breastfeeding. But you should not *start* to breastfeed because that will cause the increase in oxytocin that can cause contractions.

And there's also a simple trust in God's creation. He designed women's bodies to breastfeed and nuture a child in the womb.. they are both totally normal and natural and GOOD things.. not the diseases and complications and problems that the male-as-perfection medical model makes them out to be.

My pro-life OB said that breastfeeding doesn't interfere with a new pregnancy. I don't have the documentation to back this up - sorry! But we discussed it pretty thoroughly because I have miscarried while still nursing a toddler, and wanted reassurance that this hadn't endangered the new baby. He said definitely not.

Jodie, it's not oxytocin but other hormonal factors that are the reason it is suspected breastfeeding may sometimes lead to a failure to implant as a cause of miscarriage before pregnancy could even be detected.

Kellymom.com has this to say, with more information and links on the page: "If you are still transitioning to full fertility (as discussed above), breastfeeding may affect the success of implantation. Once implantation is successful, breastfeeding should not affect a healthy pregnancy[.]" Also see
this page on the Kellymom site.
