I was reading through some of the old shampoo threads...
any feed back on the Saintly Soaps and Shampoo bar or the Hulda Clark Shampoo?
Any new finds that you just love?
I need something without sodium lauryl sulfate. I just tried some peppermint castiille hair and body wash... the smell was too much for me, plus it made me itch. *sigh*.

My mom uses Wen shampoo which I borrow when I'm home and absolutely love. It's way too expensive for me, though. But I started to wonder if I could get the same results from just regular old conditioner. I follow the Wen instructions* but use regular conditioner (Pantene is what I have right now). For amounts I just use 2-3 times what I'd used before. The results are almost as good. I've been using only conditioner every third day and IF I follow the instructions on that site my hair feels great. I'm switching this week to just a twice/week wash and I'm wondering if I can go even lower eventually. I tried going completely shampoo and conditioner free a couple years ago and I was not happy with the results. I wonder now if I didn't give myself enough of a transition period.
Anyway, my conditioner doesn't have any sodium lauryl sulfate so you might try doing that.
*the second link goes to the instructions for how to use the fancy Wen shampoo and the sidebar has a video of a woman washing her hair with it in the shower. Only shoulders-up but just wanted to mention in case you have kids with you and don't want them looking over your shoulder.

I'm so happy you asked this question, Melinda! I am absolutely in love with Trish's solid shampoo bar as well as her solid conditioner bar. The fragrances are soft, not overwhelming, but more importantly to me they work so wonderfully. The shampoo bar lathers nicely, washes easily and DOESN'T leave my hair feeling like straw (as all other organic shampoos did - I was so disheartened). The conditioner bar is the perfect little extra for me. My hair is thick and wavy so it benefits from a little conditioning, but too much weighs my hair down and it looks awful and lifeless. This bar is a very light, but lovely conditioner.
I've taken a cue from Lindsay and really cut back on how often I wash my hair, washing sometimes twice or only once a week. (I know Lindsay does water only, but I haven't made it that far yet.) I could never do this with other shampoos, but I can do this quite well with the Saintly Soaps shampoo.
I really can't sing the praises highly enough. My entire family uses the soap and shampoo bars from Saintly Soaps! Ok...done with my commercial now!

Several months...but it's hard to say since both my husband and I use the same bar and he washes his hair daily with it. I would guess that one bar lasts both of us about 3-4 months. That's a guess though.

Sorry to be dense about this but I noticed that the prices on Trish's site are in Canadian dollars. What is the exchange rate like, now? What does a $10 soap cost in USD?

How do you store these solid shampoo/conditioner bars? I'm picturing several bars of slime sitting on the edge of my showers, .

Well, I'm not sure I did it right  but I just put $10 into a currency converter widget thingy and it said $10CND is $9.48 US.

Thanks for all the suggestions, ladies. I also have very thick, wavy hair. I could probably go a week without washing it and no one would notice  .
*However* (sigh) my scalp is prone to being dry and itchy like the rest of my skin. After my dd was born it got so bad I went to a dermatologist who told me some earthshaking news:
If you are prone to dandruff or an itchy scalp, you need to shampoo every day. Yep- every day. I was shocked... it was so against everything I'd ever heard before. The doctor told me some of her patients completely eliminated all their scalp problems by shampooing *twice* a day.
Ok, but I was desperate, so I tried it. IT WAS LIKE MAGIC.
I got so puffed up with my success that I got lazy about shampoo brands.
The SLS is no good for any of my skin, though, so I continually am looking for good alternative products. I have also tried a variety of duds.
I'm glad to have a few more options to try now!

I am one of those people with major scalp problems. No one would know except my family because my hair is fine and layered, and you can't tell....but I get terrible sebaceous cysts on my scalp that hurt and get so big, I have to have them surgically cut out. I always ask to look at them: they look like bird eggs, perfectly oval. Anyway: wasn't that fascinating? TMI!!!! (And then I have a nice spot without hair for a while!)
I guess it's genetic; my mom told me my grandfather used to get them all of the time.
Anyway, I have to be very careful not to leave gunk in my hair....silicones. Even though I love the silky and smoothing effect. My hair looks soooo much better with a product in it or a leave-in conditioner. Boo hoo.
I can not do the "no 'poo"/ conditioner only method, although I tried it after reading how much better it is for your hair to avoid the surfactants, the sodium laureth sulfates....it really made it worse for me and my scalp so itchy. I do use non-sulfate shampoos now, though, since I just went back to a deeper auburn hair color, so that I don't lose the color too fast. L'Oreal Ever Pure shampoos are inexpensive, give that clean feeling without sulfates, and I think are not stripping my hair. My scalp has been fine. We'll see~ I MUST wash my hair DAILY!!!

Can you get the Ever Pure in Target? I am going tomorrow and will look for it. Maybe I should avoid the silicones, also. I really don't want to go back to twice a day shampooing. I've been doing really well for so long on once day; I'm spoiled.

I keep them on an open rack shower organizer - those things you hang over the shower head.
I think Trish recommends you put the soap bar in a dish that drains for just the reason you mention, Melanie.

I have been using baking soda for about two years. I really do like it. Be fore warned, it did take approx 4-6 weeks until I felt like my hair/oils on scalp normalized to the new routine. I now only wash every 4-5 days.
Also, after doing this for a year or so, I purchased a good quality brush with porcupine and boars hair. Brushing regularly really helps distribute the oils and keep my hair looking nice.
FWIW, I have very long, thick, fine hair

I've just taken to washing scalp area only, with regular shampoo, rinsing very thoroughly...and then putting conditioner just on the bottom half of my hair (my hair is below BSL)...I've gotten to where I can go several days between shampoos/conditionings. I wear it up (lately braided and in a bun), and it looks good, especially if I am not sitting there 'playing with it' all the time.
I'd love to go 'poo free', lol, but I don't think that will happen...lol.

Oh yes. You can get this at all major drug and grocery stores. Right now there are three types: Moisture, Volume, and Smoothing. I don't buy the conditioner in this line, just the shampoo. I love the Rosemary smell, too.

My Target only had one choice for the Ever Pure, but I snagged it for $5.99.
It wasn't in the regular shampoo aisle, which threw me at first. But I found it and several other SLS-free shampoos (which cost from $10- 17 a bottle; ouch!).
I will try the Ever Pure while I wait for my saintly soaps (they would make a good Christmas present, don't you think?) I am excited to have two new options to try- both already road tested . Thanks again!

I have just seen this thread so a tad late in responding . I too want to try Trish's soaps . I am so nervous to try new soaps as I have ecsema on my head too . I am ok with a baby goat milk shampoo I by it is from QC and now ventured out and bought myself avalon rosemary shampoo . so far no bumps on my head . I cannot stand castle soap it coats my hair and makes it feels gross and then the bumps appear . Jonson baby shampoo is so horrid on my head I've no idea how people wash thier abbes with that stuff. I also oil my head at least once per moth making my own herbal hair oil . I try and leave it in about 3 days if possible .

I love the Avalon rosemary shampoo, Roxie. Generally, though, my hair does the best when I don't use the same shampoo twice in a row. So I work my way weekly through the Avalon rosemary, Nature's Gate (don't remember the *smell*), and Pantene Pro-V. DH is strictly an Avalon rosemary man, though. I've gotten scalp bumps/zits over the years, but generally associated it more with face wash and moisturizer choices. As long as I stick with Cetaphl soap and Clinique moisturizing lotion, things are fine.

Okay - I have FINALLY found a shampoo that I can use and that I LOVE. The problem with many natural and organic shampoos is that they may not have SLS but they do have citric acid which many allergy sufferers and "sensitive skin" people cannot tolerate.(as well as nut/plant oils that many allergy sufferers cannot do) I tried every "sensitive/free and clear/ pure"shampoo there is - and 99% had citric acid or grapefruit seed extract and the remaining 1% left my hair looking blah. A couple of months ago my derm recommended the DHS brand - whilst the sensitive one has citric acid, the Zinc Shampoo is fantastic. I do not have dandruff or itchy scalp but it is lovely lovely shampoo - really mild, no bad smell and leaves my hair looking and feeling good. My dd who is also very sensitive to most shampoos does well with this too.
BTW - the skin range from Person Covey is also working out great for us - DML - and believe me that we have tried EVERYTHING.
