Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I hope this is OK to ask here. I knew that if anyone would know the answer to this, it would be someone here...
I was asked this question by a friend of mine. She is fairly sure that the reason she and her husband are not conceiving is that she is not ovulating. She asked whether or not the Church allows her to use medication to get her ovulating properly again. I really don't know the official "this is OK, this is not" teaching of the Church on this one. Can anyone help? Is there a "natural" way (read non-prescription drug) to take care of this problem? Could it be a dietary or not enough of a certain vitamin issue?

Thanks for your help!
Christine

About 4 years ago, I researched the question of the moral use of Clomid, which is an ovulation stimulating drug. Though the Church hasn't issued definitive teaching on the use of this drug, from a Catholic standpoint, it is morally acceptable to use this because it assists a woman's body in functioning normally and does not in any way impede or come between the intimate act of conception.

Discerning its use beyond that is another question...and I'm certain your friend and her husband will make great use of the graces given them in the Sacrament of Marriage.

If she hasn't already read through Marilyn Shannon's Fertility, Cycles, and Nutrition, I highly recommend it!

Does she know why she is not ovulating? That might be the first thing to figure out. She could have high prolactin - I did. Using Clomid to bring about normal ovulation is morally acceptable. Using is for some other reason - trying for multiples for example - would not be.

Definately start with the book Jennifer recommended.. so much good information!

Another thing to check (by Basal body temps) is thyroid function. If the temps are pretty low.. like under about 97.2 before Ovulation, it's likely the thyroid.. and I know people who don't get pregnant even when it looks like they're ovulating because of the thyroid being low. And the most basic test most doctors do won't necessarily show thyroid being too low.. but temps will show it.. and you could go on to ask for additional tests based on that.

you could help her find a practictioner of NFP to help her. Look at Couple to Couple Leagues website or Creighton Method website.

Can NFP help with that sort of trouble? The couple has been practicing a very general form of NFP for years, she said, just to determine general fertile times. She said she assumes she isn't ovulating because there is lack of m*c*s and thus no fertile time.

I doubt the couple would be using any medications to try for multiple births or anything like that. They are very wanting to do God's will here. I know that is why they are trying to discern if even going to the doctor about this is something they should do. Their thought is that maybe God is just not wanting them to conceive right now. But then again, maybe they need help? If the Church says certain types of help are OK, maybe they should go for it? That's their dilemma.

Jodie,
I will ask her about temps. I'm not sure that she's gone that route before. Thyroid check is a good thing to recommend.

Jennifer,
I gave her the book title. Now she's looking to see if any local library carries it. I'll keep you posted. Thanks!

Keep the help coming. I feel like maybe we can help this couple make an informed, faithful decision.

God bless,
Christine
