Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anybody experienced this from many, many antibiotics? My poor dh, who is having a pretty challenging year with his health, has been laid low for 3 weeks now with "the runs", although he can't run to take care of it because he's wheelchair-bound. He's simply miserable. He's only been able to get to Mass once in 3 weeks because he's so afraid of an accident. There are several accidents each day and during the night. He's been on antibiotics of one kind or another for much of the last nine months, for bladder infections mostly, and then in June and July when he had IV rifampin and vancomycin related to spinal surgeries.

Two Saturdays ago we were in the E.R.. He needed a few bags of IV fluids, had x-rays to rule out obstruction, and I got to collect and send in 5 specimen containers. C.diff, all parasites, worms, etc, were all ruled out. The BIG significant thing in my mind was that the number of normal gut bacteria was a big, fat ZERO. We've tried lots of good quality yogurt, keffir, align probiotic capsules, to no avail. Two different meds to slow the motility of the intestinal tract have not worked. Today, the suggestion from the doctor's office is clear liquid diet for 24 hours, and then slowly advance.

Poor guy is beyond wretched. He's not getting much sleep either.

Has anyone else ever experienced taking so many antibiotics that you had no good bacteria left? Any idea how long it takes to re-establish a healthy gut? No one seems to know........

All ideas, experiences, and suggestions are very, very welcome! So are prayers!

the probiotics need to be kept up.. they'll add good bacteria but as long as there's residual antibiotics in his system they won't be able to survive long.. so getting on them and staying on them should help.. a minimum of 30 days after the last of the antibiotics is what I've heard.

Also you might want to check out Breaking the Vicious Cycle

The important thing from what I always heard is that you need to get good bacteria into the gut (adding it often if it won't last long because of antibiotics) so that you don't get things like yeast overgrowth resulting in systemic yeast (candiditis I think it's called)

I'm very sorry for your husband. My only suggestion is to keep w/ the kefir, pref homemade, which has more probiotics.
