Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

Has anyone ever experienced the "baby blues" BEFORE baby has come?

I'm almost 29 weeks and for the past week or so EVERYTHING has made me sad and weepy. I am beyond excited for this little girl to come and yet I feel sad so much of the time.

Today I didn't move from the bed. When my poor dh called on his lunch break to check in (which he does every day anyways) and found out I was still in bed and extremely weepy he came home from work. That helped a lot...his hugs and TLC but he can't be doing that every day!

Has anyone got any suggestions? It's not life threatening depression by any means just an overall sadness and lack of energy really to want to do anything. And then I start to feel guilty that I'm sad when a precious little one is coming and I think I should be upbeat and excited every minute! Even if anyone just says "been there done that" I'll feel better that it's not just me!

Yes, Jen! Been there...done that! Hormones can do mean things to a girl!

I'm hoping Jodie or someone can chime in with some supplements/herbs that would assist in leveling out some of those hormones during pregnancy. My survival strategy...I'd just keep telling myself that "tomorrow is another day" in my best Scarlet O'Hara voice. And, I allowed myself to get extra rest, drink plenty of water/liquids, and to scale back expectations with regard to the level of work I expected of myself.

I always did better on days that I *had* to get up out of bed to do something - like an OB appt or a lunch date with my husband.

to you and the littlest!

Red raspberry leaf tea is good for normalizing hormones (and in the process emotions) and it's good fore pregnancy.. tones the uterus, high in nutrients like iron and vit. K.. just good for you. (I cheat and get capsules )

Getting enough water, can be difficult because you need more water than usual and most people don't drink as much as they should normally.

Taking good prenatals helps tremendously, I use NF Formulas prenatal forte, others I know take a similar one - Rainbow Light Complete.

Getting up and getting out helps too, get sunlight if you can, get a bit of exercise.

AND BE NICE TO YOURSELF. It's ok not to be happy and excited all the time. Your life is changing, it won't ever be the same, you're leaving something as sure as you're looking forward to something. You can be sad, and scared, and nervous and excited and panic-stricken and in love with the baby all at the same time

I second the recommendation for good quality vitamins.

I have a VERY difficult time taking vitamins, especially when pregnant, however, I was able take New Chapter Tiny Tabs without nausea. This one change made a HUGE difference in how I felt.

Ditto what the others said. I went through this with my last. You will get through it!

Thank you all for the support and encouragment! Today has been a bit better. And it's nice to know I'm not the only one and that I'm not crazy!

Yep. Every single time. I was on Zoloft during my last pregnancy.

From my reading, it seems that the two biggest nutrients to worry about are Omega-3 and the B vitamins.

Here's a book I am finding very helpful:

Rebuild from Depression

Also... if you're in the northern hemisphere... the light is dwindling now and if you're deficient in vitamin D (as many or even most of us probably are), you may start having trouble now, too.

Angela~Didn't you just sort of review this book? Somewhere, but I can't remember where? Goodreads? or maybe the Book List? if you remember, maybe you can link it. Or maybe I've completely lost my mind and this is the first time you've mentioned that book

Thank you for the links to the book! I'm going to check it out.

And I'm in New England and I always get a touch of the seasonal sadness....which I hadn't even thought about as of yet! Yikes. It may be a long winter!!

Viviane you'll be in my prayers too! I see you're due only a few weeks after me!

I'm right there with you too, Jen (at 27 wks). And I have two little girls to take care of too. Some days its all just too much and all I want to do is hide under the bed and never come out.

Prayers for you! Try to exercise if you can -- on the days that I can actually fit a 30 min walk in the morning in I feel better.
God bless!

"post partum depression" often begins during the pregnancy ("ante partum depression") - a fact I learned as I researched during my last pregnancy.

And then, at some point after delivery, it can worsen.

Definitely try the "natural" methods mentioned, get fresh air & exercise, and be social... but if things get much worse, talk to you OB about medication. I took much better care of myself (and therefore my baby girl!) when I was on an SSRI. I wrote about it here.

Thanks, Jodie! I should have just linked to it originally but I think there was A LOT OF NOISE at the time and I got distracted. So, no, Suzanne, you're definitely not the one losing your mind.

You know, this is also a good point. On days when I find myself feeling really, really bad, I often find it helps to take a deep breath and start folding laundry. I will often pray as I'm doing it. Something about the repetitive motion helps, the prayer helps, of course, and then, to be able to see the piles of folded clothes... makes me feel better to have at least gotten some little thing accomplished.
