Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm hoping someone here may have heard of this before and might be able to help.

My first niece was born late Friday night (the 4th) and mother and baby were released on Sunday. They went to the pediatrician on Tuesday for a simple bilirubin check for the jaundice and were sent straight to the children's hospital.

The pediatrician found several white spots with a red ring around them in her mouth and in as much of her throat as they could see. He had no idea what they could be and she was admitted to the hospital last night since then they have run labs and tests but they have not had any results yet. They live 3 1/2 hours from most of our family; my mother drove up to help them as soon as they called.

Has anyone heard of this kind of thing in a newborn? They are breastfeeding and the baby seems to be doing fine in every way except for these strange white and red spots. My first thought was that a white spot with a red ring was a sign of staph infection, but I'm assuming their pediatrician would easily recognize that and wouldn't it be odd to have that infection in her mouth?

My brother and sister-in-law are getting very little information from the staff at the hospital and are so frustrated. This is their first child and they are already back in the hospital with her at just a few days old. :(
