what's the best way to do this without using one of those microwavable heating pads? We have one, but I got rid of the microwave a few months back. I suppose I could put the thing in boiling water...
Or I could do what my mom does and put hot water in little boiling jars and wrap in towels...
Or something I read about on the 'net -- hot uncooked rice in socks...
What does warm, moist heat mean anyway?
If I just read that without knowing any of the other ways I'd just use a towel dipped in hot water and then wrung. I remember my mom using either hot water or ice water and towels for cold/warm applications when I was a child.

I admit I use the heating pad that has a removable pad that you can dampen. The moist towels or washcloths would cool off so quickly that I would spend more time rewarming than actually treating my pain.

I think Jenn's idea is good.. a damp cloth with a heating pad over it. Those other things don't really give you *moist* heat.. and the rice is heated in the microwave as well.
if you don't have a heating pad.. a crockpot with water in it on low.. and a bunch of rags would let you keep changing the clothes and keeping it hot without having to get up all the time.

My dad used to heat salt in a pan and put in socks for hot compresses...but that's not moist, unless you wet the sock first? It was however, the most wonderful relief for sinus pressure and migraines.

We use the heating pad that Jenn mentioned. But this time of year, "warm, moist heat"does not sound relieving.

yeah it's hard to put a jaw in a tub.. unless it's really deep so all of you up to your jaw can be in it
Can she/will she eat pineapple? it reduces swelling and speeds healing of soft tissue injury (or damage from surgery or such)
with ginger works even better.. we like making a blend of pineapple and ice and juice and some grated fresh ginger.
If the acid is too much you can blend it with ice cream or milk or yogurt to help with that.

jodie and everyone, thanks for the suggestions! she's already had dinner and is full, but i'll try the pineapple tomorrow. she *loves* pineapple. i did make her some pureed thai-flavored-chicken-coconut milk-red pepper-ginger-soup tonight. i should have thought of adding pineapple!!

We put a hand warming packet in a damp sock.
I have TMJ and need to put heat on it most evenings and mornings. This method works the best for me.

Directions from my doctor - Slice a potato and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Put it inside a warm, wet washcloth. the potato will retain the heat and keep the wet washcloth warm.

My dentist recommended one of those electric heating pads with a removable sponge for my jaw problem. I thought he was crazy and teasing me until I saw one in the drug store!
Hope she's getting some relief now. Jaw pain is such a pain! Don't forget a soft foods diet. Some things seem soft, but they aren't really.
