My three year old has been scratching the palms of her hands off and on all week. I can feel that it is slightly bumpy under the skin but there are no sores or skin eruptions. It hasn't changed in appearance or spread. It mainly bugs her at night and when she wakes up. When she is busy during the day, I haven't noticed any scratching.
Any thoughts?

Yikes, I would LOVE to know what causes itchy palms. This actually happens to ME a lot. I can't pinpoint it, I used to think it was when I was outside walking/sweaty and my hands were swelling. But a few times it's happened indoors when I'm not hot at all?!!?

My girls get like that if they have been exposed to a soap that they are allergic to. Sometimes it is a sensitivity that builds up over time. I have to get a natural dish detergent or else I am pretty much doing them all myself

I had always heard that itchy palms could be connected to a liver problem {and I don't think that necessarily means something really serious} it might be worth asking the doctor about that if it doesn't settle..

starches make my hands itch.. you can see the redness and welts usually though.. though sometimes not on the palms though they're itchy too.
So like raw tomato or potato (peeling potatoes is not fun when that happens)
BUT usually only when my skin is dry.. so if I keep my skin moisturized then I can peel potatoes without reacting.

Yeah, growing up this is what I heard too.
Seriously though, did she touch some fruit or nut that she's possibly allergic to? Or shellfish? My kids have this reaction to various things -- walnuts, shrimp, citrus, chayote, etc.

My palms are itchy when I use a metal spoon to mix up batter -- I have a nickel allergy and can't wear any inexpensive jewelry (so I don't wear any! ) ... I'm thinking it probably is an allergy to something your 3yo is touching/holding ...
did you change detergent or new bedding?

Sounds like a good excuse to get some nice stainless steel and/or wood utensils

or a good way to "have to" stay out of the kitchen all together!
Seriously though, my palms are "wicked itchy" after mixing up cake or cookie batter if I use a metal spoon ... use wood or plastic and no problem!

Years ago our 4 year old started scratching her palms at night. After a week or so it got to the point where she had a hard time sleeping and her arms started itching too. Turns out she had scabies. They are most active at night. I could not believe this until I recalled her holding hands for about five minutes with an usher at a rosary procession and recalled that when she let go of dd hand I had noticed a rash on the usher's hand.

Hmmm... I will go for the money coming reason!
She has been washing her hands a lot more because she is potty training. She hasn't had skin problems up until now. But I have very sensitive skin. It has been going on all week, so I wouldn't think it could be something that she had brief contact with.
With scabies, is there a visible rash? Her skin is not discolored but just slightly bumpy under the skin.
I guess I will just keep watching and check with a doctor if it doesn't clear up. I will keep watching for that money too. Sure would help!

Scabies would be more common on the soles than palm because of the moisture factor, but certainly could affect the palms. You're looking for bright pink bumps or scaly rash. Doc will do a painless scrape test for that.
I'm going to second what Anne said. Itchy palms and soles can be associated with liver trouble. It's probably not that, but if you can get her in for a simple blood test, at least you can rule it out. Tylenol and some other OTC drugs (including topicals) can be culprits.
Sending prayers that it clears right up and she's soon comfortable.

Just to follow up on a reply that was made, scabies are very common on the hands and while you often see red bumps or lines along the webs of the fingers, we never did and it was her palms that itch. Our doctor had trouble diagnosing it because there were no visible signs or even areas to take samples to look at, but it had gone on long enough that he had us try the treatment and it was gone the next day. I hope it's not scabies, but if it is she'll start going crazy with itching at night pretty soon.
