Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm wondering if anyone can clear this up for me.

I have read in various places that high vitamin cod liver oil is very important as a supplement.   But I have also read that cod liver oil is not high in omega -3 fats. So...

Should one take a cod liver oil supplement AND an omega-3 fish oil supplement?

I found a good omega-3 liquid oil from Nordic Naturals with vitamin D3 added to it. I found my mood immensely improved when I took 2 tsp a day, providing 2000 IU Vitamin D. (That's twice the dose, but I'm nursing AND I live in a northern climate with long winters -- and this summer is incredibly cloudy.)

The Weston Price Foundation recommends a supplement of cod liver oil to equal 20,000 IU Vitamin A and 2000 IU Vitamin D. (Here's the link). I've had really good results with that dosage of Vitamin D so I'm inclined to believe them about the benefits of the cod liver oil, but... do I need to take an omega 3 fish oil, too?

I've just read in a few places that cod liver oil is a good source of omega-3, (EPA and DHA) as well as being very high in Vit. A, D, and E. According to Wikipedia, pregnant women should not take cod liver oil b/c of the very high amount of Vitamin A which has been known to cause birth defects. Caution is also advised b/c the supplements may contain high levels of toxins such as mercury and PCB's, especially since some companies test for purities while others do not.
So, after all that, I would say no, you don't need to take another supplement for omega 3's, but it would be wise to make sure you find a source from a reputable company who tests for purity.
