I have been hoarse for a few weeks and today saw the ENT - he says my larynx is very swollen and thinks the pregnancy reflux is continuing and combined with nasal allergies is causing the swelling.

What can I do for reflux? I don't eat any of the food he has told me to avoid. He said no eating 4 hours before bed. I have to use a nasal spray. Is there anything natural/herbal/homeopathic I can use?

I took Papaya when I was pregnant. I won't say it cured it, but it did offer some relief.

papaya and bromelain (pineapple) help with digestion so those may help like Molly said.

sipping something with lemon and honey in it might be soothing.. at least the honey.. lemon oils will soothe a sore throat, and honey is a natural antibiotic and could help your throat heal.

I started taking Betaine about a year ago for reflux. I don't have reflux anymore and I do eat the foods your supposed to avoid. My chiropractor's take on it (and I've read this before) is that reflux is caused from not enough stomach acid, not too much. Betaine is a digestive enzyme that comes from beets. I also take HCL activator (it's a natural acid activator). I know my mom tried to take Betaine and was sensitive to it, fyi. Hope you can find some relief soon!

I thought reflux was a relaxing of the sphincter that normally keeps food in your stomach..

I know the heartburn I get when pregnant is usually from low acid foods, and though I haven't tried it I have a friend that swears by a teaspoon of mustard for pregnancy heartburn.

Elevate the head of your bed! Just being propped on pillows doesn't work. My dh put blocks of wood (4 or 6 inches high) at the head of the bed. I've suffered from GERD for years and it was amazing how much it helped.

thanks everyone. funny thing is i do not feel like i have reflux - it is just the throat and nose symptoms. i slept very elevated last night (just pillows for now!)I am going to try Acid Ease from Enzymatic Therapy too.

FWIW,

My uncle has a bad case of reflux and his doctor told him to always make sure to drink plenty of water when taking pills (Vitamins or otherwise) and to eat something that is sure to push the pill into the stomach. Apparently some pills begin to dissolve in the esophagus exacerbating the reflux issue for him.

Just thought I'd pass it along.

Alkaline water is very smooth, BTW and non acidic. Maybe it would help?

Just an FYI...the Acid Ease pills worked pretty well for me while pregnant. They coat the stomach and anything that the acid ends up touching making everything more comfortable. Just ask dh...I couldn't run out of these things!

You can find alkaline water at most large health food stores and i think Whole Foods carries it as well.

evamor alkaline website has info on alkaline water.

There is a lot of controvery about alkaline, some call it snake oil on tap, but I started drinking it during the 1st trimester of this pregnancy when I couldn't even keep water down and the difference was amazing.
