This is something I am wondering about. Especially after reading something recently about lots of vitamin pills staying undigested in the gut. I was unable to take vitamins for a lot of my pregnancy - now I have started - thanks to 4ladsmom who recommended these Vitafusion oneswhich I seem to be tolerating well and which dd who is allergic to many things seems ok with.
Does anyone hold to the view that we should be able to get our vitamins from the food we eat and supplements are not necessary?
Just wondering............

I did.. until after my 3rd pregnancy.. and taking my vitamins meant no ppd and not taking them meant having ppd.
And then during my 4th pregnancy when my midwife highly suggested a higher dose vitamin and I decided to try it after some looking around and I went from NEEDING a 2 hr nap in the afternoon (as in lock myself in with the 3 littles because I was gonna fall asleep whether I wanted to or not) to not even feeling tired in the afternoon..
When I can see a dramatic difference between if I'm taking them and if I'm not in how I feel, in what I'm capable of doing.. then YES I do actually need them.
It makes sense that you should be able to get all the nutrients you need from food.. the problem is that often the amount of nutrients in food is not what it should be. Modern farming pratices generally only replace the nutrients that are needed to keep the food growing.. not all the nutrients that it has taken from the soil previously.
I would not get "regular" vitamins from walmart or the like, not even the ones that I got from the CNM with my first birth.. but rather many of the ones from health food stores are made with nutrients that are used by your body and they are not just passing through.
Vitamins like many things are not created equal and your "regular" vitamins from major stores are generally not made with the best ingredients.

Jodie - which ones do you do? I have always taken good ones from health food stores - new chapter/rainbow lites/natures plus etc - just not sure they were doing me good. I have heard it is better to take chewable or a liquid - with Mike and Matt I took a liquid. I have food sensitivities and I wonder if I react to some of th extras in whole food vitamins?

I use the NF Formulas Prenatal Forte. They're 6 pills a day like the Rainbow Lite's. And they cost more. But they work so much better for me. And I often don't take the full 6 pills a day.. more like 2-4 but that works for maintaining but when I hit a situation that my body isn't handling well and I pick it back up to the full 6 pills a day I really can tell the difference.

Oh, if someone could tell me a good chewable or liquid prenatal vitamin I would be forever grateful!!! I can't swallow those big pills at all.
Right now I am taking a double dose of Nordic Naturals liquid Omega 3 + vitamin D3, and I think it is making a big difference in my mood. But I haven't been able to find a decent chewable/liquid prenatal.

Ok, *duh* - just clicked on your link, Marilyn -- those are chewable! Are you taking a double dose of the multivites to equal prenatals? (A midwife once told me to do that with regular chewables.)

Angela.....the same vitafusion makes chewable omega-3's....they taste fine! Actually, I have never, ever been able to take any supplements of any kind...I would get violently ill...like an allergic reaction or something. The Vitafusion vits are the first I have ever been able to take, and have no side effect!! I have taken the Vit D., Vit. C, mulitvit, omega-3's.....all just fine.
I am not sure what to say about doubling...
Is your asthma feeling any better??? I sure hope so!!
