Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

At my 10 yo dd's well-check today, the doctor discovered that she has about a 9 degree curvature of the spine. I was, um, a little dismayed, but my dh has told me that it may run in his family and that he had friends with scoliosis in high school and they were fine. So I feel better. But the concern is still that she's at the beginning of her adolescent growth spurt and the curvature may grow worse.

After doing some research, I think that a program of excellent nutrition, back-strengthening exercises, and some posture work may be in order. Can anyone who has dealt with this give me more information?

We have delt with this with one of my 10yo twin dds. She has a 12 degree curve and at first we were very concerned because she was limping and complained of hip pain. It turned out that the hip pain had nothing to do with the scoliosis. We did see a physical therapist and began a regimine of back exercises that really helped her posture.    I would recommend that you seek out some type of exercises and possibly have her checked in a year by an orthopedic back specialists. That is what we will do in November and hopefully she will be fine. PM me if you want to discuss this further. I know how worrisome this can be.

Blessings,

Hi Angela,

Where are you located? My baby is a patient at Scottish Rite Hospital in Dallas, TX for a birth defect (a different orthopedic condition from scoliosis) but they treat scoliosis and everyone raves about their facility. There's another one in Atlanta, GA as well as the Shriner's Hospitals around the country that all treat orthopedic conditions. All these facilities are funded strictly by donations and therefore do not accept payment from patients so if you were wanting a second opinion, I would consider asking your pediatrician for a referral to one of these facilities.

Best,

I have scoliosis myself. Can't remember what my curvature was/is, but it's definitely more than 9-12%. I would highly recommend the back exercises - and for you as a mom to be very diligent in making sure that she does them. I might have been able to prevent having to wear a brace for a year if I hadn't been such a slacker with doing my exercises. In fact, I don't really ever remember doing them at all - maybe a couple of times.

If for some reason your daughter does have to wear a brace, it really isn't that bad. Mine went from under my breasts, to my hip bones, and you couldn't even tell I was wearing it under my clothes. I was even a cheerleader while wearing it!    I have a double S curve though, and part of my spine is rotated around, so mine was pretty severe, whereas it doesn't sound like you are in that situation.

Praying for you. My scoliosis has NEVER been an issue for me - in fact, I hardly ever even think about it.
