Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

One of my daughters has cuticles that get REALLY high, fast!!! They will cover about half of her nail if they aren't pushed back every 2 weeks or so.

She soaks her fingers in warm water with a bit of lotion and soap, and then I push them back with my nails....but she's starting to complain that it hurts, probably for 2 reasons:

1. I really should be using a "cuticle-pusher-backer" , I think they're called orange sticks.
2. I think the dirt, grime, etc. from being outside more is starting to infect them.

Should I be trimming the excess cuticle? I have one of the trimmers, but it makes me nervous to use it on her....it's bad enough to use it on myself! I've also read not to trim cuticles, cuz it protects against bacteria, etc.

**Does anyone else have this?
**Tips?
**Routines that helped?

Surely we have a professional manicurist somewhere on 4Real

I alwasy thought (and I don't know where I got this from) that "overgrown cuticles" ......

a. don't look nice (which on a 5yo, isn't really an issue)
b. can interfere with nail growth
c. have more chance of tearing, which leads to infection

I have found with my son, myself and other children I've taken care of that if the cuticles aren't pushed back routinely, hangnails become a HUGE problem. I've never seen cuticles get too extreme, so I can't further than that - all I can say is that hang-nails start out just unpleasant to look at and end up infected and red and raw and yuck (technical term ;) ).

For the OP, I would suggest trying to make a routine of doing the cuticles every week (our night is Saturday evening in preparation for church the next day - careful bath, nail trimming, whatever else needs to be done) - after a while, hopefully they won't get so bad.

I push mine back with the towel as part of drying off after a daily shower. Maybe doing them more often would keep them from getting so *extreme*?

Peace,
Nancy
