Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I'm having surgery on Tuesday, 6/2, finally getting my bunion-y arthritic foot dealt with. I'm trying to figure out how to keep personally clean, as the instructions I"ve received say to keep it scrupulously dry for 2 weeks (I'm guessing until the stitches are removed). BUT, if I can't at least wash myself and wash my hair, ..... Waaay too long a time to go without! Any suggestions, please?

Peace,
Nancy

OH, Nancy, it will be good to get the surgery, I'm sure, but the hassles afterward.....

Unless you can wrap the foot completely in plastic, I would think you'll need to do spongebaths. Do you have access to a handicap shower (with a seat) where you could wrap the foot and maybe still let your leg stick out the door? Maybe at a friend or family member's house, if they're not too far away?

As for your hair, why not contact a local hair place and explain your situation? They may not charge you that much for just a wash (I'm thinking a Hair Cuttery type of place). Can you get away with washing it every 3-4 days (I do that now). Personally, I find getting my hair washed like this very relaxing. And it might be good for you to get out of the house a bit while you're recovering.

the hospital will likely give you some ideas.. but a plastic bag over your foot is likely to help. And depending on your shower/tub maybe you could get a stool in there to sit on? (I think one of my food grade 6 gal buckets would work for instance) and get a showerhead that is mobile and can be handheld.. that would let you cover the foot, sit down.. stick the foot OUT and then turn on the water, adjust the temp before you get wet.. and do all your washing fairly easily (for not being able to stand or get your foot wet. )

I have had bunion surgery on each of my feet (but not at the same time!). I just took baths, and kept the bandaged foot propped up on the side of the tub the whole time. I didn't even cover it with a plastic bag, just was careful to keep it out of the water, but you would be safer covering it. It takes a little more effort, but it's not hard to just lie down in the tub and wash your hair, etc.

You're in my prayers for a quick recovery! There's never a good time to have to be off your feet!
