I know there is already one thread on thyroid problems going on now, but I didn't want to hijack with my question.
I got a call from the doctor today saying that my thyroid levels are low, as well as my Vitamin D level. She wants me to come in and talk about treatment. Years ago, I tested low and started supplementing with Kelp and my levels normalized. I had done research on Synthroid and was leary of the side effects, namely loss of bone density and long term dependence on it.
I am wondering if any of you have treated this naturally. I don't know my numbers yet, so I am not sure how aggressive the treatment needs to be.
Thanks!

Molly, I've been dependent on Synthroid since the birth of baby #4. I have never tried anything natural b/c I was so far gone before the Dr's realized something was very wrong. I am monitored by a wonderful Endocrinologist who tests my TSH/T4 levels every 4 weeks. My Endo will tweak the meds to be "just right" I take 137mcg M-Sat and 100mcg on Sun... I cannot function without it. I get ultrasounds on it every so many years now. My T4 (Metabolism) is non-functioning "UNLESS" I am pregnant.
Are you having symptoms from thyroid issues?

Jodie,
Are there specific supplements I should be taking?
It is hard to say if I have symptoms of hypothyroidism or just symptoms of my way of life! I am tired, cold, overweight, etc. But I haven't slept through the night in years, I have always had bad circulation and I don't eat well enough or exercise enough.
Molly, can I do any sort of cleanse while breastfeeding? I was under the impression that I can't.

no clue.. I've been taking my prenatals (when I remember to take anything) pregnant or nursing which means that's all I've used for the last ummm.. almost 13 years
I use NF Formulas Prenatal Forte (I think you can search for it online and see the amounts it has and all)
It's fairly similiar to Rainbow Light complete prenatals (that's the 6 a day one)

My symptoms included...exhausted... I would wake up and go back to bed. I slept and slept. I also lost a lot of hair.. Look at your pillowcase each day to judge.. "A lot" I also put on a lot of weight for no reason... after a while, when I became really sick, I was beginning to go numb.. started in my extremities.. then it went up into legs and back.... I Knew something was wrong then...

my thyroid issues first began 6 years ago - i tested at the border of normal function but felt most of your symptoms. i did 2 months of no sugar/flour diet. i lost 20lbs and all of my symptoms went away. all hormone levels since then have been within a normal range. i would add taking iodine and a very good multivitamin. rainbow light is an excellent brand. hope you feel better!

I was diagnosed hypothyroid with my 3rd pregnancy, 9 years ago.
I had been a vegetarian at the time and when I searched for alternatives I did come across things like - "the fresh blood from organic animals", "dried, crushed thyroid gland" Blech! But it did make me wonder about the apporpriateness of my vegetarian diet -and I did start to add back in meat to my diet.
Also because I was pregnant I did not feel that I had the liberty to try other things on my own and I didn't really have an alternative physician to monitor me. Through an ultrasound my baby was diagnosed with a club foot so at the time I put all my energy into researching that and trying to remain calm (there were questions whether his clubfoot might be accompanied by more serious complications).
I've been on Levoxyl ever since...by the time I had things at point where I felt I could look into alternatives again I was already on the levoxyl for several years...it is very hard to switch once you've been on it for a number of years.
I also seem to recall seeing a book through the Weston Price foundation - something about the benefits of coconut oil and the thyroid - but I can't seem to find the title.
My biggest frustration is that there doesn't seem to any interest in finding out *why* so many women are having thyroid problems - the physicians just seem so content to have you take that little pill for the rest of your life. Drives me crazy - the pill mentality of our health care.

Molly,
I have read several places about the benefits of coconut oil for thyroid issues as well as the benefits of kelp.
There's a difference between having thyroid issues (which can be self-limiting --such as postpartum thyroiditis) and having Hashimoto Thyroiditis which is an autoimmune disease. There IS a natural alternative for Synthroid called Armour which many people report as working better for them.
As for cleansing during nursing --no you really shouldn't, because toxins will release into your milk.

One of my friends with this problem asked that I mention having yourselves tested for Celiac Disease as it is the primary cause of Autoimmune disorders.

Thanks Ladies! Lots of good starting places for research this weekend. I want to be armed with lots of information before meeting with the doctor. I have only seen her once, so I am not sure how open she is to alternative ways of dealing with things.

Fwiw, I've used Armor for years for low thyroid. Synthroid didn't work for me. My bloodwork comes out fine but I'm still symptomatic. Had to fight with doctors to get them to agree to let me use it, but my current family doc is fine with it. The benefit of Armor is that it has T3 in it. Synthroid doesn't because the body manufactures T3 from T4. My body doesn't do that well, apparently. My doc is NFP only and said that lots of her patients prefer it. Armor is not really alternative, though. I tried that route and it didn't work for me. My understanding is that Armor is the "old" way to do it. That's why the endocrinologist always gave me a hard time about it before I switched doctors. He didn't like that one tablet was not exactly measurable to the next.

I use Armor, except while pregnant or nursing, it is much harder to regulate for me.
FWIW- Armor, though not an alternative, is derived from animals, making it much more natural.
