Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

I have always had trouble with thrush when I nurse. Now I think I'm getting it again with my twins. Ds seems to be the one getting it, not dd who was on antibiotics for 2 days.

I know I've read about foods to eliminate from diet. I do not eat sugar most of the time, but I do eat a pretty good amount of dairy. It would be really hard for me to fully take dairy out of my diet.

I would love some ideas to nip the thrush in the bud quickly, before it becomes full blown in all 3 of us. I usually end up with it deep in the tissues of my breasts, and would like to avoid this, this time around. I am trying a baking soda solution swabbed on me and their mouths each time we nurse. But this is so hard to remember in the middle of the night.

I would love advice from anyone, but especially any of you who've nursed twins and dealt with thrush.

Thank you all in advance.

One thing I would check is to make sure that no one else in your family has any sort of fungal infection......toes or whatever.

Back in my LLL days, a number of years ago, we would recommend Acidophilus for both you and baby. You can get the little caplets, crack them open and swab the powder in the babies mouths. Also, I think I used vinegar, on myself, not baby. Do your little ones use pacifiers or bottles? You would need to boil them if they do.

Yeast is so hard to keep at bay. I hope someone else can give you some more current advice.

One of the best nursing sites is Kellymom.com. I was going to post this in your reflux thread, but I'll do it here, too. She has lots of advice on reflux, food alergies, and thrush, and link to go elsewhere.

I don't have experience with thrush, so I hope some people can provide more info. There are some old threads on it, too.

One of my babies had thrush pretty bad on both sides of his mouth. The Ped. had me take a clean burp cloth ( cloth diaper) an make a clean hard sweep of one side of the mouth to remove as much as possible in the one swipe, move my finger to a new dry spot of the cloth and swipe the other side. Sounds crazy, but it REALLY helped get rid of it quickly and I cleared up fast after that. I also ate yogurt and used the ointment in the purple tube for cracked nipples ...Lanol..something... ( If I am remembering right) SOunds crazy, but try the cloth swipe. I did it each time I saw the white in his mouth.

I have always had a problem with thrush with my kids while nursing. I have had twins too since you mentioned that. Have you ever used Gentium Violet? You can get it in the pharmacy. You put a little on a Q-tip and them swab it all over their tongue, cheeks and yourself. (Don't use so much that they swallow any of it.) You can only use it a few days though since it can have a burning effect. This is considered an "old fashioned" rememdy so I don't know if you want to use it, but I have when nothing else worked!!!

Then, there is always Nystatin, but I heard from my doc that this is becoming resistant to some thrushes. There is also some other med. but I forget what it is called. I would check with doc before using Gentium Violet. I have used it with success in the past, but you have to be tenacious about it and even though it "seems" to be gone, it may not be and come back with a vengence. (as with all remedies for thrush) Also, if you do get a prescription for oral Nystatin for the babies, ask for Nystatin cream for you. I have had it deep in the breast before too and it REALLY hurts!!! It can ruin your nursing relationship and seriously affect your milk supply. (You won't be as prone to let down milk if you are so tense from the pain for example.)

Yes, eat live culture acidopholus, there is a difference and I ate a lot of yogurt. I would cut down on white bread and things like that too and good for eating hardly any sugar.

Also make sure you only wear all cotton nursing bras, NOT anything that is man-made material etc. Also, let them "breathe" a lot with flaps down.

Good luck. I feel your pain!!!!

Gentian violet worked for me some years ago. Last time I took several precautions - I got rid of my wool nursing pads and went with disposable. I also requested a prescription for some sort of nipple cream that had to be done by a compounding pharmacy. Definitely cut out all "white" foods, sugar and dairy. I wish you the best!

Our ds had thrush when we lived in MX . We of course were eating drinking tons of fruit and juices .Combined with the intense heat well it produced thrush .
I went staright to yogurt .I just gave him a teasppon of yogurt about three times a day and I also ate it myself . I also coated my nipples the first day or two as well with the yogurt as yeast can breed on warm moist sweaty places ;-)
How old is your child ? old enough to drink juice ? If so then you could reduce the amount of juice intake to water instead and if drinking juice dilute it for sure with water . If eating fruits perhaps try to eat those which have a lower sugar content .
Hope this helps :-)

My babies and I have had this too (Although I have never been blessed with twins)

Things that worked for us:
-acidophilus capsules (what Mary Chris said)
-yogurt
-Nystatin
-lots of water to flush it out of system (for me,not baby)
-also after you change babies diaper and put on ointment I covered the area with cornstarch and this worked really well.

Peace,
Jody
