"I am writing to seek your help in identifying mothers for
participation in an important study based at the University of Massachusetts.

The lead investigator, Dr. Kathleen Arcaro, is conducting a study on breast cancer risk and is looking for nursing mothers who have had, or are expecting to have, a breast biopsy.

As you may know, long before a woman might notice a lump in her breast, there are changes in the DNA of epithelial cells in the breast. Some of these cells are expressed in breastmilk, and this study is examining these cells to try to identify molecular biomarkers for the development of breast cancer. One possible outcome of this research is the development of an early, non-invasive method of assessing breast cancer risk through breastmilk. The results may also lead to new treatment strategies.

The biggest challenge in this study is finding women who are both lactating and who have had a breast biopsy. In order to recruit such women we are placing the attached brochure in waiting areas of lactation centers, OB/GYN offices, breast imaging centers and the like.
