I have an ear infection I have had a headache for about a week that I kept ignoring. Last night it became extreme, I woke in severe pain with blood in my ear. Went to the Walgreens clinic this morning and sure enough I had ruptured my ear drum. They put me on som many drugs: amoxicilin, zyrtec, muscinex, and advil.
I greatly dislike taking medicine, but am in so much pain. My balance is off, I can't bend over with out crying out. So not fun.
Any suggestion for relief?

I am so sorry for your pain. I have been there before. I used a heating pad for my ear but it was hard to sleep on that side when in extreme pain. Advil does help tremendously. I took about 4 200mg at a time during the worst of it. Drink a lot of water. You are in my prayers.

Oh LeeAnn, I can't imagine how uncomfortable you must be. I am praying for your recovery from this.

a lot of the same things that help sinuses drain would help ears too.. so staying hydrated, steam, sucking sour things maybe? your head drains better if you stay in a semi-reclined position rather than laying flat. perhaps a bit of eucalyptus essential oil on a hanky to breathe.

I am so sorry. I had a similar thing two years ago and they gave me stronger pain meds - something in the narcotics family - which I couldn't use during the day but took it at night to sleep. I saw a GP at the clinic (3 xs), but eventually ended up at an ENT where they had to go in a drain (?) it. I will pray that you feel better.

No advice but perhaps this will amuse you while you recover...I had an ear infection while nursing my youngest. My doctor wanted me on a strong antibiotic and suggested I pump enough milk to last for a week, take the antibiotic and then resume nursing. Ha! Ha! I just stuck it out. It was misrable though. You have my prayers.

Thank you for the ideas and prayers.
I am feeling slightly more human this evening.
I haven't moved from the couch much today. It is so nice to have big kids now. My 14 year old took such nice care of me today. He wrapped me up a comforter, brought me tea, made soup for lunch, and played with the 4 year old.
The dividends of homeschooling!

I had a double ear infection last year after I had the flu. I was also early in pregnancy and my doctor didn't want to give me antibiotics. I found the greatest relief is the steam and such Jodie mentioned. A heating pad also helped the pain (I was in bed, though). The doctor prescribed camphor oil in boiling water. I (or rather, my husband) put it in a fondue pot and I could sort of put a towel over it and concentrate the steam to my head. I would do that for as long as I could stand it, get air and cool off, and do it again for 10-15 minute stretches.
I tried sudafed, but it didn't really help, but I could feel my ears start and try to drain some after the steaming.
I also took tylenol for the pain (I was pregnant or would have taken stronger stuff--I was in a LOT of pain!)
Also, tons of Vitamin C.

Sorry - I'm late with this but maybe this will help someone else -
I have had really good results with an onion compress.
Slice an onion in half, wrap in foil and heat in the oven until warmed through - maybe twenty minutes or more - it should be getting soft and juicy. While it is still hot but cool enough to handle I wrap it in layers of cotton flannel (I make strips out of old flannel sheets or worn baby blankets).
You need enough layers so that the compress feels warm but not burning - hold over ear or just behind the ear. As the compress cools just remove a layer of flannel. My goal is about 20 -30 minutes - usually less with older infants and toddlers who are too squirmy - have a pile of books ready!
Do check the compress often because the hot fluid from the onion will begin to soak through the layers of flannel and it can get too hot. If a child will tolerate it I strap the compress on with a longer piece of flannel.
This really does wonders for earaches or really bad head colds - I think the warmth and aroma help open everything up.
