Does anyone have experience with umbilical hernias? Sarah's belly button really doesn't look like your average outie...

My fourth has an umbilical hernia (he's almost three now). All my other kids have "innies," and #4's would be an innie without the hernia. It's just a little soft, squishy bump that sticks out slightly, mostly when he laughs, cries, etc. It is better than when he was a baby, and the pediatrician said that most mild umbilical hernias correct themselves over time. Occasionally, a more severe umbilical hernia may require surgery, though my girlfriend's dd had what I would consider a more severe umbilical hernia (it stuck out about 1/2 inch or more), and she never did anything about it. Her daughter is now six, and is fine, though her "outie" is a little more "out" than most.

Golly, I hope he doesn't kill me for this...
My husband had an umbilical hernia when we was a baby - and from my understanding it was pretty bad. He was born 8 weeks early and not expected to make it (obviously he did!) so his parents opted to see what it did on it's own. He has suffered no ill effects from it, but he has a very. serious. outtie.

Two of my four children have had umbilical hernias.
Nathan's was huge. It looked like a lightbulb and at least 3 inches. I won't even admit all the wierd things we did because my MIL told me it would help.  The doctors told us that if it didn't go in by itself when he was two or three it would require surgery. It went down, the skin has tightened, but he has an outie.
Teresa had one also. It was much smaller and went in on its own when she was about a year. Her belly button is now an innie.

My brothers who are twins both had a hernia. They also were preemies. Theirs were huge! The hernias did go down without surgery and they do have outies, but it's not so bad.

Ditto everyone else, Elizabeth. I also see a preemie thing going on also. My only baby out a ten, with a huge umbilical hernia, was a preemie-5 weeks early.
It went away on its own.

Poor dear. It's not even her due date yet and already she's dealing with weak abs. That makes two of us  Thanks for your insight. Michaela, I read about some of those remedies--I can only imagine

My younger brother had an umbilical hernia at birth (he was born just slightly early, so not a preemie). He had surgery on it when he was around 3 years old. He did have to be put under for the surgery, but it was out-patient. He hasn't had a problem since.

My oldest, born at 31 weeks, had a cherry-sized umbilical hernia, which did go away on it's own by the time he was 18 months or so. It's now an "in-betweenie" . Definitely not an innie, but also doesn't stick out beyond the rest of his belly.

My 13 month old Noel (who came six weeks early) has one. His is about the size of a ... well, I don't know what to compare it to, really. It's big enough that we get lots and lots of comments. It's oddly shaped and more than one well-meaning child has told me that "your baby's peepee is out of his diaper." 
If it hasn't closed up by the time he's three, he'll need minor surgery to fix it. Other than that, I forget it's there until we get the comments out in public. I just keep an eye on it to make sure it stays squishy, because it's only if it hardens that it becomes dangerous.

My niece, who is 4 now, had one (she was born full-term). Her's was HUGE - at least 3 or 4 inches long. The dr. said that it might go away on its own, but it never really did, and she ended up having surgery this summer, right before her 4th birthday.
Andie, homeschooling mom to 3, and preschool teacher to 5!

Our 8th baby had one, he was born at 38 weeks 5days so not a premie, we just watched it, I pushed it every day to see if it would still easily go back in. It actually healed on it's own, it started to get less and less, somehow it just slowly went in as it closed.
It scared me when I first noticed it, I hadn't ever seen one of those before. And I hear you on the weak abs, oh my...
