I had blood drawn for testing with my annual physical exam recently, and got a call back from my dr's office today. It seems my bad cholesterol is high for the first time. (Not terribly high, but above the normal range.) So exercise and a lower fat diet are in order. I already knew I needed this, but now I have doctor's orders to give me extra incentive.
I just did some reading online about HDL vs. LDL cholesterol and realized that I'd like to add some flaxseed into my diet to help increase the good cholesterol. (I tried fish oil supplements in the past and cannot stand them. I taste them all day long! )
I looked on Amazon and see Bob's Red Mill Flaxseed Meal in different types and sizes, along with actual flax seeds. For those of you who supplement, what do you buy? Where do you buy it? And please share how you consume it. (directly, mixed in certain foods, etc.)
Thanks!

if you get the flax seed.. it needs to be ground.. the seeds will pass right through with little benefit otherwise. It goes rancid fairly quickly so you'd want to grind them as you use them.
I buy Barlean's or Spectrum flaxseed oil and take 1 tbsp per 100 lbs of bodyweight. not capsules (you have to take a huge amount of those and it's way more money than the oil).
anyway the easiest way for me to take it is on a spoon poured in the back of my mouth mostly past my tongue (the texture bothers me) with an acidic juice as a chaser doesn't take much.. just a swallow or two of juice.

I use spectrum flaxseed oil, as well, A little over a tablespoon per day, blended right into my smoothie, so I don't notice it! I only use the oil because I can't be bothered with grinding the seeds for each use.

We buy the whole seeds and grind them every morning. I have them in my oatmeal. I have also had them in my yogurt. Others in my house will also put them in milk, on salad, or mixed in just about any other food.

I buy mine from Costco (but we prefer Bob's Red Mill golden flaxseed because it dissolves easier) - it just says "Organic Cold Milled Flax" on the container. We store it in the fridge and don't laugh - here's how my dh takes his "daily dose" - he puts 2-4 tablespoons in a small glass, fills it with a little water, stirs it up and chugs it. He can't stand to take it any other way. Crazy! I actually don't mind doing it that way, but I prefer to use milk and not water...blech! I add it to breads, salads, spag.sauce...um...everything!

We can buy flax seeds or meal at our Target or HEB (TX chain of regular grocery store - not specialty), or health food stores. We also like the golden flax meal the best. Here's an easy, quick recipe. You don't have to use the Splenda but can sub real sugar.
Muffin in a Minute
1/4 cup flaxmeal
1 packet Splenda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp butter,softened
1 egg
Pour all into a coffee mug and mix very well. Microwave one minute.

Thanks for all the help, ladies! I bought a container of cold milled organic flaxseed meal and am storing it in the freezer. I've tried it two different ways so far. In flavored yogurt, I did not taste it at all. I didn't like it as much in oatmeal because it changed the consistency so much. (And took away the sweetness from the brown sugar - I don't want to end up using way more sugar just to hide the taste.) I bought a large box of 6oz flavored yogurts at Costco this evening, so I think I'll just add that to my morning routine with the flaxseed meal in it. That muffin in a mug sounds intriguing, Dawn. I'll have to check it out too!

Oh good! A handful of my friends have tried it out (with real sugar, too) and have really enjoyed it. It's also a satisfying gluten-free 'bread' recipe.
