Oh, Dearest Mother, Sweetest Virgin of Altagracia, our Patroness. You are our Advocate and to you we recommend our needs. You are our Teacher and like disciples we come to learn from the example of your holy life. You are our Mother, and like children, we come to offer you all of the love of our hearts. Receive, dearest Mother, our offerings and listen attentively to our supplications. Amen.

My two younger children are not yet immunized as we were waiting because of intolerances to preservatives in our family.

There is a whooping cough outbreak in Sydney and we know some children who have it at the moment.

My husband would like them to be immunized asap. I'm going to get onto it on Monday but was hoping to glean any advice before then. Anyone been here, done this?

Is it shutting the door after the horse has bolted?

Hi Pam,
I have no experience in this situation, but I wanted to answer since the boards are closed on Sunday and you are going to doc on Monday.

When my friend had all unvaccinated kids in house and 2 got it, everyone else was given antibiotics. I know that it is really the most dangerous to get whopping cough when you are under 1 year old but it was no fun for the 4 year old either!

I found this link to a discussion with someone else (in Australia!) with the same question. It could help...

I'll pray this sickness passes right by your family.

Pam this is probably to late but we had whooping cough 19 yrs ago while pregant with #4 . Out of our community of friends there were 6 families in all who had the cough. In each family including ours all children be they immunized or non immunized got the cough and to the same severity .
I've no idea if the immunization itself has changed since in the 80's but we now have not immunized our next children because of th9is expreience . Since then we have known 3 other families who got the cough in the 90's and same results .
The cough was horrid we had to hold our ribs while coughing me my belly as well .It lasted 3-4 months but we did not to be hospitalized or receive any medication what so ever . It just ran its course . The one I think it was hardest on was our ds who was only 1 yo at the time .I basically had to hold on to him while he coughed . Our whole summer was pretty bad that yr no camping , no restaraunts etc. that cough is absolutely uncontrolable . If you have the cough I totally empathize with you & family .
Much Love , Roxie

yes, so some research first.
I don't think the whooping cough vax is instant by any stretch, so running in to get it now, might not do any good. Some of the vaccines take 2 or 3 rounds over 6 months to a year to be fully immunized.

The cough is horrid, esp for little ones and elderly. It can be strong enough to crack ribs in them or cause asthma like gasping breathing. Not to mention in anyone they are going to ache after a prolong bout.

NOT saying you should get it.
NOT saying you shouldn't get it.
Just saying make sure you get questions answered first.

Just wanted to add that my (immunized) dd had this two months ago. There was a big outbreak around here. The Dr. wasn't even surprised that she had it in spite of being immunized. She is only 7, you would not have thought it would have "worn off" yet. It was a miserable sickness, to be sure.

A friend has passed on that unless you've been immunized within the last year that the treatment/prevention (when it's in the family some docs will prescribe meds preventatively) is the same for vaccinated or non-vaccinated.

Apparently, from her experience, it does "wear off" very quickly.
