I drink water almost exclusively. My problem is I get so busy during the day, I don't stop and drink.

So busy moms, how do you do it? How do you get enough water?

It is a big issue for me at present, even though I am breastfeeding my body doesn't seem to remind me enough that I need it until I start to suffer varying problems resulting from dehydration.

I can see now that I cannot be in optimal health if I am not drinking enough, so I tend to ask the nearest child next to me, "Do you mind getting mummy a drink of water?" Yes, that's what I tend to do! But at least I am getting enough no matter what I may be doing.

I have this problem too! In the past when I have been successful I've made rules for myself. Like whenever I use my bathroom (since I have cup in there) after I'm done I fill up the cup and drink it all down. And/or in the kitchen I keep a glass going. Everytime I come into the kitchen I'd force myself to drink at least 1/2 of the glass.

I need to get back into that habit...I've been getting a few headaches and I know it's due to lack of water.

Thanks for the reminder...I'll try my "rules" again today!

My big problem is that at night I chug down 32oz of water, without stopping for a breath . Then I wake up between 2-4 and it's a toss up if I go back to sleep before 6. Falling back to sleep at 6 really messes with my day.

I have been having more headaches lately. Today I am carrying around a water bottle with me.

Every time we sit down for a lesson or to read I make sure we have a cup of something to drink, usually tea right now as I'm still trying to get our routines down after traveling and it seems to make it more special if we sit down with a nice mug of spicy fall tea with our work. That seems to be helping us get more to drink for now, Mary Chris. If you only drink water, what if you kick it up a tad by keeping a small bowl of sliced lemons and limes in the fridge to toss in your glass, or sprigs of mint perhaps?

When I am working out I find myself drinking non-stop, even after the workout has ended. At home, I get bored with just water and will sometimes use Crystal Light to insure I get enough. Lemons help too. Also, water always taste better to me from a bottle so I try to have water bottles in the fridge at all times and I always grab one as I am going out the door in the car.

I use a refillable water bottle. I never seem to drink enough otherwise. I like to freshen it up with a lemon slice once in a while, too. I try get my water bottle at the beginning of any new activity (sitting down to read aloud, getting in the van, sorting laundry, etc)- I'm far more likely to drink it if it's right next to me. I also tend to drink (a lot) more if I'm consistenly working out. I have one more rule- for ever cup of coffee, I have to drink 2 cups of water. That rule alone pretty much ensures that I drink enough water.

try filling up your full day amount of water in water bottles and set them all on your kitchen counter. then you will see how much you have drank, and how much you still need to go...

Maybe you'll find some inspiration here.

Hydration is difficult to keep up with, but so essential. My arthritis is exponentially better when I've had enough water.

Blessings,

Hydration is a health issue here in the desert! I've spent quite a bit of time and research on this topic. This past summer I realized I wasn't hydrating enough and boy did I feel better when I got back up to snuff! Here's my plan:

GOAL:

I aim to drink 16 (8oz.) cups of water per day. This amount was recommended for me on the Hydration Calculator.

HOW TO:

When I wake, I have a full large glass of water waiting for me at my bathroom sink. I drink 2 cups. I have a child refill the cup and place it at my sink. I drink 2 more cups from this source before 1:00. In our living space I have a full large cup on *my spot* on our breakfast bar. I will drink 4 cups, 2 at a time, from this source before 1:00. I repeat the same routine between 1:00 and 8:00 pm bringing my total to 16 cups.

TIPS:

Measure how many of your regular swallow equals a cup. For me, each swallow equals approximately 1 ounce. This helps me to keep track of my drinking when I'm away from my home system.

Use a straw, it can make the fluids go down more quickly.

Bring your tolerance up to drinking 2 cups at a time if leisurely sipping isn't working for you. I wouldn't drink this much at the same time I'm eating. (There are some folks who don't recommend drinking and eating at the same time for other reasons - not sure how valid they are.)

Drink homemade green iced tea sweetened with stevia (made in an iced tea maker that your 9yo can run) when you just can't take one more glass of water!

Drink bottled water on the run and keep track of how many you drink.

Your hydration today is for tomorrow.

Don't drink after 2 hours BEFORE your bedtime. The temptation is to chug at night what you missed all day but this will keep most people up all night using the bathroom which will interfere with the sleep we sorely need.

I just answered your question from my perspective, Mary Chris. Later today I'll read the replies and I thank you all in advance for your contributions. I'm always looking for ways to keep hydrated.

Love,

Love the calculator, Angie! So I need to be drinking a little more than 2L a day. I'm thinking if I filled a 2L bottle with water at the beginning of the day, I can keep track more easily. Or 2 1L bottles would be less intimidating.

I personally keep a 20oz plastic cup full of water on the kitchen counter, in the cup spot in the car, in the cupholder near the computer, and in my bedroom. Then as I wander from place to place I have a cup waiting for me.

The upside: lots of water available all the time
The downside: the cat drinks from them sometimes. Also, I have a weird fear of mosquitos breeding in the "still water" of my water cups ....yep, my anxiety disorder is a bit over the top sometimes.

Rachel, use a coffee travel cup with the closeable lid.. just get new ones for the water or it'll taste like coffee

One of our cats drinks from water cups too. I always try to make sure the level in the cup is below her reach before I fall asleep. Or I use a water bottle with a thin neck. This same cat is the one who will pull down the lever on our water dispenser to watch the water run. Oh, and that may not be a selling point ...

Thanks for the good advice everyone! I'll go grab a cup of water and check out the calculator.
