Hi,
I am just looking for opinions, on what you would do, in this specific case. I am aware of the issues and arguments on both sides of the vaccine issue, and I don't want a debate. Just opinions, on whether you would or wouldn't.
We took dd6 to her new pedi today. I have never used a pedi before, always a family dr, but the new insurance likes kids to go to a pedi.
We liked her a lot. She reviewed DD6 shot record, and didn't have any problem with the ones we have done, and the ones we have refused. (She also seemed very supportive of homescooling - and when asked dd something, and dd responded that she couldn't really read yet, DH said we aren't really worried about it, we think she will when she is ready, and the Dr said how refreshing it was to hear that, that she gets so many parents in with 4 and 5 year olds and they are frantic because their children can't read, and she tells them not to worry - by the time they are 8 or so they will. So that was kind of a nice surprise. Anyway.)
HOWEVER. She did say she recommends the Hep-A. The reason being 2-fold - 1st, there are a LOT of international visitors to this city, and Hep-A is widespread in other places. 2nd, food workers in LV are not required to wear any gloves when preparing food. (ick.)
It is one of the required shots for kids in school.
She said it is totally up to us, but she felt she needed to at least inform us that she recommends it.
So - what would you do?

I'd go ahead and give it especially with those things she brought up (Ick!).

We did all of those shots for the children ... and then my dh and I had to have them before we moved to Wales. Our adopted son had the shots before he ever came to live with us (he was almost 5). It just seems to be the standand operating procedure now.
This is not to say that I am necessarily happy with it ...

I feel I should make one comment. I worked in a restaurant that did not require us to wear gloves unless we had an open sore, cut, etc. on our hands. Gloves at times can be more likely to cause cross contamination than bare hands because they may not get washed or changed as often as necessary. And people can scratch their nose, hair, or any other body part just as easily with a glove as a bare hand. (If we ever saw co-worker doing any of these things unconsciously, we would simply look at them and say "hands" and they would go wash up immediately if they hadn't realized it already.)

Yuck. Yuck. Yuck. That no-gloves policy has me squirming .
Seriously, though- the HepA vaccine is strongly recommended here in WA, too, and we went ahead with it. The "better safe than sorry" just sort of won that out for me.
How wonderful that your pediatrician is supportive of homeschooling! That's very encouraging to hear. When we told our pediatrician that we homeschool, she looked me square in the eye and said, "So does she have any friends?"
