Has anyone used a Family Practice/Family Medicine doc for their OB care?
I've used an OB for 3 babies (actually 2 different OB's) and had a midwife practice for the last 2. Other than the OB for baby #3, who had about a negative 3 on a personality scale!, I've had ok experiences. The midwife practice isn't real "midwife-y"....nothing especially holistic/natural. All my choices are part of a large university health system.
I've found a Family Practice doc who's on the One More Soul list and is on our insurance list. My husband has met him through something at work and says I'd like him. He's done a show on Catholic radio and I think I'd probably be really comfortable, BUT....I certainly want good care.
I've never had a pregnancy complication and I would still deliver at the same hospital where I've had my last 3 babies. OK, now I'm starting to ramble....everyone I know has had an OB or midwife so this is a new possibility for me.

Our family practice doc delivered my oldest daughter and they have a great connection now! If I were to have another hospital delivery, I wouldn't use anyone else. I like having using our family doctor for as much as I can because she knows me and my family so well.

I had an FP follow me for several pregnancies. In the end, I only had one delivery by an FP - but come to think of it - it was my easiest delivery. I enjoyed knowing the doctor and the doctor knowing my whole family. If things get complicated, a good FP knows when to call for help.

Marie, you have uncomplicated pregnancies and deliveries, if you don't have an emotional attachment to your previous caregivers, it really wouldn't hurt to make this switch, you'd probably benefit actually, if it is a good Catholic doctor - in a normal healthy pregnancy, a good connection on an emotional and religious level can make quite a difference in your experience. Let us know what you decide!

My FP delivered 5 of my children. (3 living and 2 still births--nothing to do with him or anything that could have been changed) Also a Catholic, when we knew that babies would be still born, the first call he made was to a priest to be on hand immediately after delivery for me.
I am soooo not a dr person, but I really like him. He is a dr of ostiopathy, and respects that I am sooo not a dr person  I enjoyed going to appointments at his office. We knew everyone there and they knew us. Unfotunately, increasing OB insurance convinced him to not deliver babies anymore.
We wish we could still use him as my OB. I would say, that if are comfortable with this dr, switch to him. And most FP's will call in help if needed.

I LOVE having a FP do the OB care, and use one whenever I can! Usually they will refer you if you get *too* complicated, but I love having the same doc for the whole family.
Then again, I had an AWESOME FP doc in Colorado who went to our church, so I got spoiled! He delivered my 4th and 5th child.
It is so much easier when Mom's doc and baby's doc are the same person, esp. if later there are feeding issues, etc.

OK....I think you ladies have put my mind at ease.
I probably don't have a fabulous chance of having him be the one to deliver the baby (you get whomever is on call for the whole Fam. Med. practice system wide, which is big), but I think the pre/post natal care would be a big plus.

the dr that delivered my first 2 was a gp and he did a great job, imho. not as antsy about everything, kwim? he was more comfortable taking a hands off approach. and since he saw us all the time for well checks and such, we had a better, more informaed and comfortable relationship.
