This is my third pregnancy, and the first time I've ever had any kind of morning sickness. I haven't thrown up yet, but I'm extremely queasy all day, and cannot seem to eat more than tiny little bits at a time. I'm worried, because I only weighed 105lbs at the start of this pregnancy and I'm down to 101lbs as of this morning. I can't really afford to loose anymore weight!
I've tried nibbling on saltines but that doesn't seem to help much. My dr. recommended B-Natals but they're too expensive.
Any tried and true remedies that you could recommend? Thanks!

Oh, Emily my heart goes out to you. This is not an easy cross to carry, and is even harder with little people around that so badly need mommy.
My pregnancies are quite difficult. I won't bore you with the details - lets just say that by about 7 weeks, I don't eat by mouth, I eat through a central line in my arm. So, that's the extreme...and you're probably not going there if you didn't go that far the first pg.
It does sound like you're feeling more queasiness, and I can understand the concern about weight loss. I lost between 10 - 25 pounds in the first trimester with all of my babies. (I manage to make up for it quite well in the 2nd and 3rd though )
Eating small amounts is exactly what you want to do right now. That's easiest for your body to digest. I know it's unscientific, but for what it's worth, if it doesn't sound good, it ain't stayin' down. So, while you *should* try to choose a protein and a carb and snack your way through the day, you can't always keep that down. Try to go for calories.
You can have your dh just pick up a bottle of vitamin B6 for you. They are NOT expensive, and the B vitamins do help with nausea.
Lemons with salt. No kidding. It will take the edge off nausea...just the edge.
Ice chips - stay hydrated!!!!
Raspberry tea.
Small meals - no sugar!
Ginger candy can be tolerated by some - the sugar made me sicker, but it might help you.
If your doctor is the type that just believes that a little weight loss never hurt a pregnant woman, and doesn't believe in intervention - switch right now! I've been there. It's not a pretty road, and is quite dangerous. My first pregnancy was like this. I started at 110, dropped to 90, was severely dehydrated and both baby and I were medically in danger by our 4th month. My doctor thought it was all normal. We switched. A little rehydration (in the hospital) was all I needed to round the corner.
I don't like to take medication while pregnant at all, but don't be afraid to ask for anti-nausea meds if you start to drop 5 - 10 pounds quickly. At that point you will be burning ketones (you're burning fat for calories for you and the baby) and it sounds like you don't have it to burn. The first med they offer is Phenergan. It does work, but in my opinion only because it renders you completely unconscious for about 12 hours. If your mom is around to help you, great. If you have to keep up with those littles - don't take it!!!! Zofran is my drug of choice when it comes to nausea. It is actually pretty safe to take while pg. No side effects. Very, very, very expensive though - so, this is one for insurance to pick up at $10 a pill, one pill every 4-6 hours. Our insurance covers it.
Decide right now to relax all of your expectations, every single one of them for the next few weeks. Allow your energy to go into making that baby.
I'll be praying for you, Emily! PM me anytime if you need support or just to tell me how blobby you feel. I know! I can tell you exactly how many fibers are woven into my couch - I counted them all. Remind yourself - there will be a baby on the other side of this.

Dear Emily,
You are in my prayers. Small amounts and eating what appeals to my sensitive palate have worked for me in the past...Jennifer's advice is perfect! I just PM'd you, too, about some ginger candy...

I second the lemon idea. Even squeezing some into some water and sipping it helps.
You may be too tired to try this but getting outside for some fresh air and taking a slow walk helped me a lot with the last pregnancy.
Praying....

Hi Emily,
A few things help me, I have had pretty disabling morning sickness with most of my pregnancies.
First of all, protein first thing in the morning, and then throughout the day. Eggs, cheese, bacon, high protein cereal. Do not start with carbs! I used to do the cracker thing too and wonder why it didn't help. Now, a couple of saltines by the bed to get you down the stairs are okay but then go for protein.
Vitamin B6 is what you need. It isn't expensive. You can get it at any drugstore. And try to get a whole food vitamin like Rainbow Light, they don't seem to provoke the same nausea that synthetic vitamins do. I get mine through Amazon.
Ginger tea. It's pretty yucky (to me, anyway!) but it is very settling. Any other variation of ginger is good too.
Pregnancy tea. I usually only need a box or two to get through the early months. Again, very settling and helps keep you hydrated. I like to sip chamomile too.
Small, frequent meals. Don't let yourself get hungry. Even if you don't want something, eat a cheese cube or yogurt. Don't snack on sweets. As much of a sugar addict that I am, my body absolutely rejects sweets in early pregnancy.
I will pray for you. Hopefully, you will just go through the textbook 3 months of nausea and maybe some vomiting and not go through the extreme that many women here have gone through. I have been to the point of not being able to lift my head, but never to the point of IVs and hospitalization.

Oh yeah! The lemon juice ( a few drops) in water really helped this last time! Also, gatorade mixed with water. And I hate gatorade!
Little sips of both.

Ditto on the lemon juice. Pretty much anything with a really strong flavor would take the edge off nausea for me but it was different things on different days and different pregnancies. Lemons w/salt is something I will definitely try next time! Ginger helps me. With my second anything really spicy worked great. Sometimes a pickle or a really strong olive would get me to where I could think about something more substantial. Mint.
Eat often and try to get the protein in. I think my morning sickness was not so bad this time around partly because I finally got it. Stock up on any snack that ever sounds good and eat as often as you can. Prayers for you!

if water makes you feel more sick.. don't drink it.. go for something like the gatorade that can help get your electrolytes back into balance.. after several pregnancies I finally got it into my head that at the first sign of nausea *I* need to switch to gatorade and stick with that for a while.. usually around a week.. and that seems to get me back in balance and I can go back to drinking water and such. It doesn't help everyone.. but for me it seems to be my electorlytes being messed up. If I just can't stand the sweet.. water with salt and lemon usually can work.. not so much "salty" as more like saline.. the salt buffers the water so that it's easier on your body.
the protein is important to keep your blood sugars level.. often it's the drops in that that make you feel sick.. so sometimes a bit of juice would give me a boost to feeling better as long as I followed asap with protein to keep it from spiking and dropping. exercise also helps with regulating it.

Anything sour - lemons and limes are my faves. Ginger (candied or tea). Low sugar and anything without a strong aroma. I like mint, too.
Stay hydrated, take naps, and eat any time you're not queasy. Sometimes just getting out can help - take a walk, visit someone, go to a mall for window shopping.
I take a teaspoon of Kyogreen in my OJ in the morning, and some food-based pre-nates (they're pretty spendy but my bloodwork is awesome). I've been sick for longer with this pregnancy than any of my previous ones. I think that it's the bustle of our household right now. Stress can really amplify morning sickness.
I'm praying for you!
Blessings,

Thanks for all the suggestions! I went to CVS today and picked up some seabands, and they seem to be helping so far. I'll definitely try the lemon water too, and the ginger candy. Anything to get myself eating more substantially!

I third or fourth the Gatorade and the egg and cheese breakfasts. This was a life-saver for me. Also crackers WITH cheese. My husband would bring me crackers and cheese in bed each morning with a big glass of iced gatorade. This really helped me. This last pregnancy was so bad though, I had to use the Zofran. Very expensive! There is a generic called "O-Dance-I-Tron (how it sounds) that you can get that is a little bit cheaper. Anyway, if you are super nauseus and you usually aren't, you may have twins!!!! I did!!

I liked sour candy, certs, or peppermints to let slowly dissolve in my mouth to help get rid of that awful taste that was always there. For some reason pop tarts, pringles, soda and fillet-o-fish sandwiches have worked at seperate times for different pregnancies. I know, I know, what horrible "food!" But it honestly helped, if only for a little while. Don't feel guilty if you find something that works that might not exactly make the top 10 healthy foods list. One night for dinner I had spinach with a good deal of salt on it and a hostess cupcake....I know I sound like a junk food junkie, but really I'm not! I just do what I have to to get through those days. Hang in there. You are a wonderful woman accomplishing wonderful things just by lying down and keeping hydrated! It seems unbelievable now, but you will look back on these days and be proud of yourself and feel strong later in life for making it through these magical times.

Unless they missed something on the ultrasound, it's only one baby this time! My twins are 6 now, and with them, I didn't have any nausea, I was just so exhausted I could barely get off the couch.

I ditto the other suggestions. Also this pregnancy wasn't as bad for me because I made myself eat throughout the day *before* I was really hungry. High protein was better, but I would eat whatever sounded good. Though, sometimes sugar sounds good but can make things worse.
Also, if I could force stuff down when nothing sounded good but before the nausea took over, that helped keep the nausea at bay, too. Yk, during those times when you feel like curling up in a ball on the bed but you aren't gagging or dry-heaving--make yourself find something you can force down (you don't have to stuff yourself of course, at that point eating a few bites can feel "forceful."
Prayers for you! I've always thought I would rather labor twice than go through the first trimester (though, I must admit to having relatively easy labors compared to stories I've heard!).

Sorry Emily! I didn't notice that you already had twins!!! I see that they are 6. How did you ever survive the 2..almost 3 stage. We are about to go batty!! (We love them dearly, but they don't seem to respond to ANY sort of training and are SO hyper! Oh well. )
I agree that you just have to get something in the stomach some way. Usually morning sickness is caused by an overabundance of stomach acid so you feel all queasy. I found I just had to sort of eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and eat and EAT That might explain why I am 30 pounds overweight now, but it sounds as if you don't have to worry about that!! Lucky you!

Henlene,
Just saw your post about the "junk" food. I ate so many Burger King Jr. Whoppers when I was first pregnant with my twins, I was actually getting strange looks from the drive-up window teenager. I told her, "I know, I know. I was JUST here yesterday. It's the only meat I can eat!!" I cannot usually stomach meat the first 5-6 months for some reason. I can't even stand the smell of it cooking and have to leave the kitchen until it airs out when husband cooks it. I DO however need protein I guess and I could stomach those Jr. hamburgers!!! This was the only pregnancy where I really felt that I had to have them. I usually eat a lot of fruit, yogurt and tomato salads with cheese when I have morning sickness with all the other pregnancies. I guess it was something about the twins.

I have had bad morning sickness with all my pregnancies. Girls worse than boys. I have tried these bands around my wrist that pulsate - kind of like the sea band but more high tech. Helped some. I can't remember the name of them. I tried various meds - most made me feel worse except for Zofran. What a miracle that was. Only took it with my last pregnancy and only when I really needed it. My husband worked in the ER at one point and would bring home IV fluids and pump me up at home. That always helped lots esp the kind with some sugar in it. Getting lots of sleep and focusing on the end result.
I will keep you in my prayers.
Mary

Oh, I also remember the last pregnancy that one doctor told me to take Flinstones twice a day instead of the prenatal vitamin. I have a hard time taking the prenatal vitamins in the first trimester - they make me so sick. I didn't try it but it makes sense.

I have taken Flintstones and still do as a daily vitamin. I chew 3 daily. They're terrific and I can tell I fight off colds and viruses much more efficiently when I use them. They work just fine and you don't have to gag them down.

I find that keeping something proteinish in the bedroom help. A spoon and some peanut butter...that's what I do.
With my 3d dd, I found that the Slimfast snack/meal replacement bars, nibbled on at the first sign of nausea (esp when I would wake up at 0400, sick, but not wanting to risk going to the kitchen, for fear I would get sick). They are individually packaged. I'd eat about 1/3d of it then, and then when i would wake for the day, I'd nibble the rest until I *had* to get up. Letting it settle a bit helps. They are higher protein, with some nutrition in them, and a few calories.
My sister who had HG, was told by her dr to take the Flintstones chewables, and to drink Slimfasts, to try and get something down herself with calories in it and nutrition. Not ideal, but you may want to try them (I find the chocolate ones tend to work best for me--they are better icy cold, well shaken, and once you get used to them, not too bad).
HTH
I concur on the exhaustion with twins pregnancy thing. I was nauseated like I have never been before/since, but the exhaustion! Before I even knew for sure I was pregnant, I would take a 3-4 hr nap each day! On top of sleeping 9-10 hrs a night...lol. The nausea...oh mercy....not any real vomiting, but the nausea....I got to my pre-pregnancy weight the DAY I found out (at 21 wks!) that I was having twins....lol. The bedrest was actually almost a God-send, cause I was so tired...lol
