I saw my homeopath two weeks ago for my breathing issues..........she tested my Vit D level (blood test)
I am WAY low.......15ng/ml with 60-90 being normal.
I am trying to figure out what this means......before I take any supplements. I can also be in the sun 20 min twice a day.
I found info that states it increases your chances of cancer, bone issues, heart disease, autoimmune disease, etc.........and then a recent article stating you may be low because of the disease process and that the oral method of supplementation may actually worsen your conditions........
I just found this:
Most people meet their vitamin D needs through exposure to sunlight [6,27]. Ultraviolet (UV) B radiation with a wavelength of 290-315 nanometers penetrates uncovered skin and converts cutaneous 7-dehydrocholesterol to previtamin D3, which in turn becomes vitamin D3 [11,27-28]. Season, geographic latitude, time of day, cloud cover, smog, skin melanin content, and sunscreen are among the factors that affect UV radiation exposure and vitamin D synthesis [28]. The UV energy above 42 degrees north latitude (a line approximately between the northern border of California and Boston) is insufficient for cutaneous vitamin D synthesis from November through February [6]; in far northern latitudes, this reduced intensity lasts for up to 6 months. Latitudes below 34 degrees north (a line between Los Angeles and Columbia, South Carolina) allow for cutaneous production of vitamin D throughout the year [14]
END
I live on that northern border in CA.......and we just finished winter.........I wondered if my levels would be higher if we tested in August???
Here is a good link
and
another take
and does our lack of sun put your health in danger?
and this article has me thinking I need to get my oldest daughter tested.......just to see if she is low....
Here is the Vitamin D Council
has anybody been diagnosed with low Vit D? what is your story? Any thoughts or comments?

Wow, Chari, you've just sent me on a quest to learn about the links between vitamin D deficiency and autism!
Personally, I think that you should focus more on spending time outside in the sun without sunscreen. That's what our plan is, anyway...

I'm almost certain that low vit. D is the cause of my kidney "stones".. not real stones.. but the crystals that are the precurser.. still hurts/aches..
The only times I've had problems were in the summer in Tucson, AZ (way to hot to be in the sun)
And in the winter up here in OR.
And vit D is one of the things your body NEEDS to be able to properly absorb calcium.

This is great, Chari. Now I can tell Eric I know what's wrong with me...not that he asks, or anything...

My niece, mother, and father have all been taking vitamin D lately and they all say they actually feel better - more energetic and have experienced mood improvement.
My nieces husband is a physician (internal medicine and endocrinologist) and he put her on some pretty high doses for a while to get the vitamin D level back up where it needs to be.
Here's an article from Mercola.. http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2002/02/2 3/vitamin-d-deficiency.aspx

Chari I went to Sally Fallon's conference in Australia last year and it was a real eye opener on the issue of Vitamin D, here is a link to Weston A Price's views on it: Vitamin D
